Job description
About the Company
Alumni Ventures is a large venture capital platform with more than $1.4B in assets raised and investments in over 1,600 companies. Its network of 850,000+ members and 40+ dedicated investors gives accredited individuals access to venture opportunities that are often limited to institutions, using alumni-led communities and a diversified co-investment approach. The company has offices in Boston, New York, Chicago, Menlo Park, Manchester (NH), London, and Tokyo, and is expanding while helping entrepreneurs succeed and building the next generation of VC talent.
The organization follows a five-day, in-office model because it values collaboration, mentorship, and momentum created by working together.
About the Role
Alumni Ventures is seeking to connect with experienced venture professionals who are excited about finding breakthrough companies and working with founders. In the Principal role, you would help source, evaluate, and close investments for an investment team, while also contributing to the wider platform.
This is an expression-of-interest posting for future Principal-level opportunities. The company may not have a live opening at the moment, but it regularly reviews candidates for positions across New York City, Boston, Manchester, Chicago, and Menlo Park. Applications are reviewed continuously and may be considered when suitable openings arise.
The position is broadly T-shaped and spans multiple sectors and stages. It offers room to develop your own investment viewpoints and specialist areas, with the main emphasis on Seed and Series A deals and occasional participation in Pre-Seed and Growth-stage opportunities. The work includes helping shape a portfolio of roughly 25 investments each year, identifying follow-on possibilities, supporting fund performance, and strengthening the firm’s standing in the venture ecosystem.
You will partner closely with the Managing Partner, Senior Associates, and other team members to identify strong companies, lead diligence and negotiations, and build relationships with founders, co-investors, and industry partners. A strong network is a major advantage. The role calls for trusted relationships with colleagues, venture investors, and founders to access exceptional deal flow, along with sound judgment, curiosity, creativity, warmth, and decisive thinking.
Key Responsibilities
- Originate and support high-quality investment opportunities that fit the team’s thesis and the firm’s broader priorities.
- Improve the rate at which sourced opportunities progress into qualified investments.
- Lead early-stage diligence by speaking directly with founders, customers, and market participants, and reviewing data.
- Assess market direction, competition, and emerging themes to improve investment decisions.
- Help move approved deals from term sheet to final close.
- Stay aligned with investment strategy to build a balanced and high-performing portfolio.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of founders, investors, and subject-matter experts to access strong deal flow.
- Increase the firm’s visibility and influence across the venture ecosystem through relationships and engagement.
- Support fundraising, investor relations, events, webinars, and thought leadership initiatives.
- Assist portfolio companies by helping drive growth and long-term value.
- Track portfolio performance through regular CEO check-ins, performance monitoring, and strategic input.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate brings 7+ years of experience in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, consulting, or high-growth startups.
A bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field is required, and an MBA or other advanced degree is preferred.
The role also expects comfort with modern AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or similar systems for research, analysis, communication, and everyday productivity.
What to Expect
Since this is an expression-of-interest opportunity, applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. If a current or future Principal opening matches your background, the team will reach out to discuss it further.
