Role overview
This position is for a Principal Engineer in the water sector based in Hamilton, Waikato. The role combines technical engineering delivery with commercial judgement and strategic input across civil and water infrastructure projects. You will take responsibility for complex assignments, support project teams, and serve as a reliable point of contact for clients. The role may also include people leadership, depending on the experience and career direction of the successful candidate.
What you will do
- Guide investigations, analysis, design work, and reporting for civil and water infrastructure projects.
- Provide engineering leadership, technical review, and sound judgement to project teams.
- Oversee NZS 3910 and NZS 3916 contracts, including construction supervision and administration duties.
- Manage technical quality, commercial performance, and project risk throughout delivery.
- Develop scopes of work, budgets, and delivery approaches that support strong commercial outcomes.
- Maintain productive relationships with clients, contractors, councils, and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to and lead bid preparation, proposals, and business development activity.
- Coach and mentor colleagues while helping build capability across the region.
About you
You are an experienced civil or water infrastructure professional with a strong reputation for technical capability, leadership, and client service. You are equally comfortable working at a strategic level and getting involved in delivery, and you enjoy solving complex engineering problems.
