Job description
Role overview
As a Pre-Board Screening Officer, you will help keep air travel safe while delivering a smooth and professional experience for passengers at the airport. The position is based entirely at Victoria International Airport (YYJ) in Victoria, British Columbia.
Key duties
- Screen passengers and luggage efficiently at airport security checkpoints.
- Check that boarding passes are valid.
- Inspect baggage for restricted items using X-ray equipment, metal detectors, other screening tools, and manual search methods.
- Safeguard controlled and restricted airport zones.
- Handle tense or difficult situations with calm conflict management.
- Communicate in a clear and effective manner.
- Follow all security rules and procedures carefully and consistently.
Training and compensation
Paid training is provided at $25.24 per hour. After training is completed successfully and full certification is achieved, the rate increases to $27.72 per hour. The role also includes comprehensive benefits and a uniform.
Working schedule
Work hours align with airport operating times and may start as early as the morning and continue into the evening. Shifts can include weekends and statutory holidays, and candidates must be available for any shift required by airport operations.
Requirements
- At least one year of customer service experience, ideally in a busy, high-traffic setting.
- Flexible availability for early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
- Strong written and spoken English skills; French language ability is considered an advantage.
- Ability to meet CATSA medical standards.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must live in Victoria or the surrounding area.
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
Clearance and pre-employment steps
If selected, you will need to complete a Transport Security Clearance (TSC), which involves an extensive background screening. After clearance is granted, you must successfully complete the Screening Officer Foundations (SOF) course before starting work as a Pre-Board Screening Officer.
