Job description
Role overview
Rio Tinto is seeking a Possession Protection Officer to join its Dampier-based rail operations team in an 8-on, 6-off FIFO arrangement. This position plays a key part in coordinating safe-working activity across the rail network and supporting track protection for maintenance, renewals and major projects. The role sits within a safety-led environment focused on technical development, ongoing learning and long-term career growth.
The company’s values of care, courage and curiosity shape how work is delivered and how colleagues are treated. Rio Tinto also highlights its commitment to finding better ways to supply the materials the world needs now and in the future.
What you will do
You will take responsibility for planning, leading and carrying out safe-working activities across the rail network, including situations involving multiple contractors and obstructions. The role requires close coordination with Train Control, Network Specialists and planning teams to make sure obstruction planning and execution are effective and compliant.
You will support day-to-day track protection needs and help ensure that all work aligns with legislation, Rio Tinto operating rules and safe-working standards. The position also supports renewals, maintenance and major projects across inland and coastal operations, while contributing to continuous improvement and the adoption of integrated systems and new technologies.
Another important part of the job is observing, evaluating and monitoring safe-working personnel and contract partners through site interactions, inspections and audits.
Requirements
Applicants should bring a strong safety mindset and at least 2 years of network protection or safe-working experience. Experience working with a variety of skill sets is also expected. A manual driver’s licence is mandatory.
The following are considered advantageous: internal or external auditing experience, prior rail experience on the Rio Tinto network, and a Training and Assessors qualification such as TAE 4110. The role also requires a minimum M8 safe-working qualification.
Benefits
Employees can expect a safety-first workplace, a permanent position with Rio Tinto, and a competitive base salary aligned to skills and experience with an annual incentive program. The package also includes comprehensive medical benefits, subsidised private health insurance for employees and immediate family, and company-provided insurance cover.
Additional rewards include an attractive share ownership plan, salary sacrifice and salary packaging options, development and education support, family-friendly health and wellbeing assistance, leave options for life events and personal needs, employee discounts across banking, accommodation, cars and retail, and possible domestic relocation assistance.
Work location
The role is based in Dampier, Western Australia, with FIFO travel on an 8-on, 6-off roster. You will be working within Rio Tinto’s large privately owned heavy-haul rail network in the Pilbara, which spans nearly 2,000 kilometres and supports ore movement from 18 mines to four port terminals.
About the employer
Rio Tinto is a global mining and materials business operating in 35 countries. The company produces iron ore, copper, aluminium, critical minerals and other resources that support the energy transition and broader global needs. With 150 years of mining experience, Rio Tinto focuses on innovation, continuous improvement and partnerships that create practical solutions and stronger outcomes.
