About Calian

Calian is a long-established Canadian organization that has been helping clients address risk, remove barriers, and make progress since 1982. What started as a consulting business has expanded into a global company serving defence, space, health, nuclear energy, public safety, and government sectors.

The company focuses on practical, innovative solutions for complex needs and supports communities and organizations in becoming more resilient, informed, and connected. If you are motivated by meaningful work and enjoy solving real-world problems, this role may be a strong fit.

Position Overview

Calian is hiring a Physiotherapist for the Canadian Forces Health Services Centre at CFB St. John's, Newfoundland. The role involves providing consultation, assessment, and treatment within the physiotherapy department through booked appointments and walk-ins, as well as supporting the Care Delivery Unit through sick parade and consultation in a collaborative care model.

This environment offers time to properly assess and treat patients, with a client base that is generally fit, motivated, and active in their recovery. The clinical team works closely together, with treatment approaches centered on evidence-based practice, manual therapy, and exercise-based rehabilitation. Military members also have broad access to health resources that help keep them fit for service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide physiotherapy and rehabilitation care using evidence-based methods and practices aligned with regulatory standards and scope of practice.
  • Manage a full orthopedic caseload.
  • Assess and treat neuro-musculoskeletal issues mainly related to sports injuries, training injuries, workplace injuries, and accidents.
  • Explain procedures clearly and record informed patient consent before assessment and treatment.
  • Carry out screening, patient education, and orthotic recommendations in a direct-access setting such as CDU walk-ins.
  • Design exercise programs that support recovery, injury prevention, and overall fitness.
  • Apply manual therapy and soft tissue techniques for neuro-musculoskeletal conditions, scar tissue, muscle tightness, circulation issues, and lymphatic concerns.
  • Use pain management methods, including acupuncture/needling below the dermis.
  • Deliver ergonomics education and perform on-site workplace assessments when needed.
  • Educate patients and health care team members on topics such as injury prevention and health promotion.
  • Help build, prepare, and deliver physiotherapy programs that support clinic operations, education, and rehabilitation, including proprioceptive rehabilitation, reintegration, and back pain self-management programs.
  • Support ongoing patient care through interdisciplinary case discussions, clinical rounds, patient conferences, and arranging additional follow-up care.

Qualifications

  • Active licence in good standing with the College of Physiotherapists of Newfoundland.
  • Manual Therapy Level 1, or McKenzie Part A, or an Acupuncture/Dry Needling certificate.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate for Health Care Provider level, or an equivalent qualification such as CPR/AED Level C.
  • At least 1 year of experience in orthopedics or sports medicine.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to obtain an Enhanced Government Security Clearance.
  • A security clearance and/or vulnerable sector screening may also be required.

Work Schedule and Environment

The role follows weekday hours from 7:30am to 4pm, with no evenings or weekends.

The position is focused on patient care, so there are no billing or marketing duties. The workplace also provides spacious treatment areas, strong access to resources, and a motivated patient population within a collaborative multidisciplinary team.

Perks and Benefits

  • Evidence-based, patient-centered approach with an emphasis on active rehabilitation.
  • Weekday schedule from 7:30am to 4pm, with no evening or weekend shifts.
  • No billing or marketing responsibilities, allowing you to focus on treatment.
  • Unlimited access to resources for patient care.
  • Spacious treatment areas.
  • Motivated patient population.
  • Collaborative multidisciplinary team.
  • On-base and in-house facilities with exercise programming, gym equipment, custom bracing and orthotics, and specialized military equipment.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits package for eligible full-time employees.
