Job description
Role overview
We are looking for a Payroll Specialist to manage end-to-end Canadian payroll operations while also taking on team leadership responsibilities. In this role, you will handle daily payroll execution and work with senior leadership to strengthen team capability, improve processes, and support ongoing operational enhancements.
Key responsibilities
- Run payroll accurately, on time, and in line with all compliance requirements, including year-end processing.
- Manage post-payroll activities such as statutory remittances, payments to third parties, account reconciliations, reporting, and general ledger assistance.
- Help maintain and improve payroll systems by contributing to requirements definition and configuration changes.
- Support the creation of reports, workflow adjustments, and other payroll system improvements.
- Assist with testing, rollout, and implementation of payroll-related changes.
- Coordinate system access and troubleshooting with internal teams and outside vendors.
- Guide, coach, and develop payroll team members through training, mentorship, and knowledge transfer.
- Spot opportunities to streamline work, improve efficiency, and introduce automation.
- Support benefits administration and disability management in partnership with internal HR and external providers.
- Work with cross-functional teams on projects, reporting needs, payroll analytics, and audit-related support.
- Take part in internal control activities and financial or compliance audits.
Qualifications
- Payroll certification is mandatory.
- At least 5 years of experience handling full-cycle payroll for Canada.
- A minimum of 2 years in a senior payroll, lead, or subject matter expert role.
- Hands-on experience with HRIS or payroll systems in configuration, support, or implementation settings is required.
- Exposure to high-volume and multi-cycle payroll operations is an advantage.
- Background in accounting or payroll reconciliations is beneficial.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and troubleshooting abilities, with excellent attention to detail.
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills.
- Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.
