About Alvarez & Marsal
Alvarez & Marsal is a global consulting organization known for its entrepreneurial mindset and practical, results-driven approach. The firm values people who think independently, take initiative, and make a visible impact for clients. Its workplace culture is shaped by Integrity, Quality, Objectivity, Fun, Personal Reward, and Inclusive Diversity.
About the team
This position comes with a strong degree of ownership, while still being backed by a colleague in Germany and the central EMEA payroll function, together with support from HR, Benefits, Finance, and other global stakeholders. It is a strong fit for someone who wants to demonstrate technical payroll expertise and leadership in a collaborative international environment within a global payroll team.
Role overview
The Payroll Specialist for EMEA will be responsible for accurate and timely payroll delivery for roughly 450+ employees, with the workforce expected to expand. The role also includes backup support for other payrolls across EMEA, involvement in the Global Payroll Transformation Project, and coordination with external vendors. It suits someone who enjoys improvement-driven work, values efficient processes, and is motivated by innovative solutions.
Key responsibilities
- Own the complete payroll process for Germany and Austria, and potentially additional countries, ensuring payments are correct, timely, and aligned with local laws, statutory duties, and internal policies.
- Produce legally required payroll records and registrations/deregistrations, including termination paperwork, employment confirmations, annual tax statements, and country-specific compliance reports.
- Stay current on payroll legislation and internal rules, and work with payroll vendors and internal payroll leadership so legal updates are implemented without delay.
- Serve as the first point of contact for payroll questions from employees, the business, tax offices, pension providers, other statutory benefit providers, and payroll vendors, with a focus on prompt resolution and strong service.
- Help improve payroll procedures, with close attention to controls, documentation quality, and readiness for audits.
- Support the digital evolution of payroll by taking part in the Global Payroll Integrator Project and related initiatives.
Candidate profile
The ideal candidate has prior hands-on experience with German payroll and a solid understanding of payroll law, social security rules, collective bargaining provisions, and benefits-related regulations. Exposure to other European payrolls is considered an advantage. Strong German skills are required, along with the ability to speak and write in English; additional languages are beneficial. The role also calls for a service-oriented mindset, initiative, adaptability, problem-solving ability, strong organization, time management, resilience, and the flexibility to work across changing payroll needs within the EMEA region.
Additional information
The company emphasizes employee growth, performance development, training, and learning on the job. It also highlights a supportive environment, well-being resources, merit-based progress, and a culture where high-performing professionals can continue to develop their careers.
