About the employer

A well-established retail business based in an inner-city Melbourne suburb is seeking a Payroll Officer to join its medium-sized team. The organisation is recognised for its emphasis on smooth operations, strong customer focus, and a supportive professional workplace.

Role overview

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, this position is responsible for running payroll accurately and on time, maintaining compliant records, and supporting the wider finance function with payroll-related information and reporting.

Key responsibilities

  • Run full payroll processing from start to finish for all employees and ensure payments are accurate and delivered on schedule.
  • Keep payroll information current and aligned with Australian legal requirements.
  • Respond to payroll questions from staff and leaders with clear and accurate guidance.
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and produce reports for management.
  • Work closely with the Accounting and Finance team so payroll data flows smoothly across the business.
  • Stay across payroll legislation and apply the correct awards and agreements.
  • Support year-end payroll tasks, including preparation of group certificates.
  • Look for ways to improve payroll processes and boost efficiency.

Candidate profile

  • Experience handling high-volume payroll in a true end-to-end Payroll Officer role.
  • Solid understanding of Australian payroll legislation and compliance; experience with New Zealand payroll is a plus.
  • Excellent attention to detail, along with strong analytical and troubleshooting ability.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and the confidence to work with people across all levels of the business.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Excel.
  • Familiarity with payroll platforms such as ADP or SuccessFactors would be beneficial, though not mandatory.
  • A hands-on, collaborative approach with the ability to juggle multiple deadlines.

What is offered

  • Permanent, stable employment in the retail sector.
  • Quarterly bonus arrangement.
  • Convenient inner-city location with easy access.
  • Opportunities for progression and ongoing professional development.
  • Free on-site parking.
  • Birthday leave, volunteer leave, professional development leave, and paid parental leave.
  • Health and wellbeing initiatives.
  • A workplace that prioritises payroll quality and compliance.
