About the role
St. James-Assiniboia School Division in Winnipeg is hiring a Payroll Officer for its Board Office. The division is seeking someone who welcomes responsibility, looks for smarter ways to get work done, and brings a positive, energetic approach to every payroll cycle. This is a full-time position with a starting date as soon as possible and an annual salary range of $67,726 to $76,230.
The Payroll Officer will report to the Manager of Payroll & Benefits and play an important part in the payroll team, supporting payroll processing for 1,850 employees across the division.
Core duties
- Run full-cycle semi-monthly payroll for 725 division employees, including teachers, school administrators, senior administrators, and Trustees.
- Gather employee data, check it for accuracy, enter it into the payroll system, and process it.
- Complete the paperwork needed for group insurance benefits and retirement plans.
- Prepare, balance, and reconcile payroll-related filings and remittances, including pension plans, group insurance, ROEs, T4s, garnishments, and union dues.
- Track down and fix payroll errors and issues related to benefits.
- Respond directly to staff questions and concerns about pay.
- Help create, put into practice, and maintain payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls in line with applicable legislation.
Qualifications and experience
- PCP certification from the National Payroll Institute, or an equivalent qualification, is mandatory.
- A minimum of 3 years of senior payroll experience in a unionized workplace is required.
- Advanced skills in Excel and Microsoft Office are required.
- Post-secondary education in payroll, accounting, finance, business, or human resources is considered an asset.
- The role calls for strong organization and communication abilities.
- You should be comfortable handling confidential information and interpreting collective agreement articles.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team is important.

This is a full-time position (100%) based at the Board Office in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Salary: $67,726 to $76,230 per year.
