Job description
About the employer
Hand Picked Hotels is a collection of 21 luxury country house hotels and coastal retreats, privately owned and selected for their distinctive character. The properties are set in standout locations across Scotland, the Channel Islands and beyond, with scenery ranging from open countryside and beaches to woodland settings. The brand focuses on creating memorable guest stays through attentive service and a welcoming team culture built around family, individuality, community and care.
The business was established in 2001 by owner and Chairman Julia Hands MBE.
About the property
This opportunity is based at Norton House Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh. The hotel is a Georgian country house dating back to 1840, set along a tree-lined drive past the original stone gatehouse. It combines historic character with modern dining, technology and guest comforts, and is positioned around 5 minutes from Edinburgh Airport and 20 minutes from the city centre. It is well known as a wedding and meeting venue.
Role overview
The Night Porter will support the hotel throughout the night by keeping service standards high, helping guests, and ensuring the property remains safe, organised and ready for the next day. The role involves a mix of guest-facing service and practical operational tasks, with a focus on creating a calm, secure and memorable overnight experience.
Key duties
- Provide attentive overnight service and place guest satisfaction at the centre of everything you do.
- Work across the bar, cleaning tasks, conference room preparation and room service delivery.
- Carry out the night audit and follow all required procedures and operating standards.
- Help maintain a secure, healthy and safe hotel environment during the night shift.
- Speak with guests in a helpful and professional way to make sure their stay feels special.
- Support smooth handovers by keeping communication clear between night and day teams.
- Contribute positively to the team culture and approach the role with energy and enjoyment.
What we are looking for
You should ideally have experience working in a luxury 4-star or 5-star hotel, with night-shift experience preferred. The right person will enjoy going the extra mile for guests, spotting opportunities to improve the stay, and suggesting suitable hotel services, products and facilities.
We are looking for someone with strong emotional awareness, the ability to think ahead, and the confidence to handle different situations calmly. A positive, solution-focused mindset and a professional manner under pressure are essential.

This is a full-time position covering 5 days out of 7 on a rota basis, including weekends. The standard working pattern is 40 hours per week, although hours may vary depending on business needs.
