Job description

About the opportunity

If you enjoy working around pools, fitness areas, and interacting with the public, this could be a great fit. Auckland Council is looking for Network Support Team members for a varied hybrid role across leisure centres, where shifts can change from day to day and you may support more than one site.

This position is ideal for people with lifeguarding or recreation experience who want flexibility, variety, and the chance to contribute positively to their local community.

What you will do

You will assist across key centre functions, including the following:

  • Pool safety and lifeguarding: Watch over aquatic areas, respond actively to keep swimmers safe, and help maintain a secure environment.
  • Front-of-house and customer service: Greet visitors, handle memberships and bookings, and help ensure a positive experience for customers.
  • Fitness and facility support: Help with gym operations, booking support, and general upkeep so the space remains clean and works well.
  • Recreation programme support: Set up equipment, assist with activities, and contribute to programmes for people of different ages.

All required training is provided at no cost, and the organisation will also fund the training needed for you to gain the necessary qualifications.

Working hours and roster

This hiring round covers a few permanent part-time roles, with weekly hours ranging from 16 to 24. Work is scheduled on a rotating fortnightly roster between 5am and 10pm, and the role includes at least one weekend day. You may be based across sites such as West Wave and North Shore centres including Birkenhead, Albany, and others. A good fit will be someone who can work one weekend day and has flexibility to work during the day.

About you

You should be someone who enjoys staying active, likes helping people, and is comfortable working in different teams and locations. Strong customer service and communication skills are important, along with reliability, maturity, and a strong focus on safety.

You also need to be able to adapt quickly to different centres and work arrangements, and you must hold a full driver’s licence with access to your own vehicle.

Lifeguard training and assessment

Fully paid lifeguard training is provided, and the cost of the Pool Lifeguard Practising Certificate (PLPC) is covered.

Before training, you must pass a swim assessment that includes:

  • 200 metres in any stroke within 6 minutes
  • 50 metres breaststroke
  • 25 metres sidestroke
  • Diving down, retrieving objects from the bottom of a 5 metre pool, and surfacing with them
  • 5 minutes of treading water

If you do not already hold a current PLPC or first aid certificate, you will need to attend training from 6 July to 17 July at West Wave.

What we offer

  • Complimentary access to leisure facilities
  • Employee benefits from Auckland Council, including Zoo passes and discount offers
  • Opportunities to build your career within New Zealand’s largest council
  • A friendly and supportive team environment
  • Clear pathways into recreation, fitness, and leadership positions

Auckland Council is one of New Zealand’s largest employers and offers broad development opportunities to support both sideways and upward career growth. As a leisure centre employee, you can use the facilities at no cost and access a range of staff perks, including a Zoo pass option and partner discounts.

By joining the Network Support Team, you will step into a dynamic role where you can strengthen your leadership abilities while working as either a lifeguard or customer service representative.
