Job description

Role overview

A mechanical engineer is needed to help create, adapt, and maintain laboratory hardware, fixtures, and testing systems. This position is centered on CAD-led design work and close collaboration with scientists, technicians, and other engineering specialists to enhance mechanical parts used in research and test settings.

What you will do

  • Create mechanical parts, assemblies, and lab fixtures using CAD tools.
  • Prepare accurate engineering drawings, bills of materials, and fabrication-ready documentation.
  • Build prototypes and assist with testing, validation, and fault-finding activities.
  • Partner with laboratory personnel to interpret equipment needs and improve performance.
  • Carry out engineering calculations, tolerance studies, and design evaluations.
  • Liaise with vendors and machine shops for part manufacturing and purchasing.
  • Make sure designs meet safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
  • Help with installation, commissioning, and upkeep of laboratory equipment.

Required qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related field is required.
  • At least 2 years of mechanical design experience is expected, with seniority dependent on the level of the role.
  • Hands-on experience with CAD platforms such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, or CATIA is needed.
  • Ability to produce detailed drawings and 3D models is important.
  • Understanding of manufacturing methods, materials, and mechanical systems is required.
  • Strong analytical thinking and communication abilities are essential.

Preferred background

  • Previous exposure to laboratory, R&D, pharmaceutical, medical device, or scientific work environments is an advantage.
  • Experience with test equipment, instrumentation, and experimental setups is preferred.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, FEA, and design for manufacture (DFM) is beneficial.
  • Ability to manage several projects at the same time is desirable.
