Job description
Role overview
We are looking for a Maintenance Operative to support property standards across Cheshire. Working within the AASC team, you will carry out practical maintenance tasks that help keep homes safe, functional, and compliant with the service expectations relied upon by local communities. The role has a direct impact on residents’ everyday living conditions and on meeting Home Office requirements.
What you will be doing
- Carry out general building upkeep across an assigned group of properties.
- Log, track, and resolve defects through the AORA IT system so property records stay accurate.
- Help ensure properties remain free from building defects and aligned with Home Office contract standards.
- Work with approved subcontractors to manage access, quality checks, and audit requirements.
- Complete annual Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) across your property portfolio.
- When needed, carry out specialist trade tasks and assist colleagues with diagnosing faults.
- Support garden upkeep, repair furniture, and manage materials through approved suppliers.
- Oversee waste disposal in a responsible way that supports recycling obligations.
- Deliver KPI-based tasks within deadlines, prioritising urgent issues and coordinating with Housing Officers.
What we are looking for
The ideal candidate will bring experience in building maintenance or a related trade, along with a practical understanding of health and safety and safe working methods. You should be comfortable planning your workload, managing your time well, and resolving issues independently. Good communication and teamwork are important because you will work closely with colleagues, contractors, and other stakeholders. A valid UK driving licence is required, together with the flexibility to travel across the region.
Checks and vetting
This position requires BPSS clearance, which includes checks of identity, employment history, nationality, and criminal record. Depending on the duties involved, additional Security Clearance such as CTC or SC may also be needed, including more detailed checks covering employment, criminal record, and financial history. UK residency requirements may apply for some clearance levels. You will also need to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire so any support needed to do the job effectively can be identified.
Working hours and pay
This is a full-time role based on 37.5 hours per week. The salary range is £27,500 to £33,500, depending on skills and experience.
Benefits
- Annual salary review and competitive pay.
- Contributory pension of up to 6%.
- 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays.
- Learning and development support, including more than 1,100 internal courses, qualification and apprenticeship funding, mentoring, and progression opportunities.
- Wellbeing support such as a 24/7 employee assistance programme, BUPA Anytime Healthline, a wellbeing app, Simplyhealth cash plans, and 30% off at Serco-managed leisure centres.
- Retail, travel, entertainment, food, and clothing discounts across around 1,000 retailers.
- Employee networks that provide peer support, idea sharing, and community connection.
- One paid volunteering day each year, plus the option to give to charity tax-free through Payroll Giving.
