Job description

Role Overview

This position is focused on keeping the lighting and lighting control infrastructure of the RF-001 expressway network operating safely, efficiently, and in line with contractual obligations. The work includes standard road lighting, decorative and architectural lighting, smart control systems, and lighting in underpasses and tunnels. The engineer is expected to ensure asset performance meets the required standards, KPIs, and SLAs.

About the Organisation

The employer is a global engineering and services organisation with more than 20,000 employees across the world and its headquarters in Paris. It delivers services across the full lifecycle of a project, from advisory and design through to operations and asset management, with a strong focus on place-making, sustainability, and connected urban environments. The company promotes innovation and aims to build teams that contribute to long-term impact.

Core Work Areas

  • Oversee day-to-day operation and maintenance of decorative and architectural lighting for bridges, interchanges, landmark structures, and feature installations.
  • Work with DMX512 and RDM-controlled luminaires, including scene setup, colour-change programming, show timing, address management, universe configuration, and data validation.
  • Track down and resolve issues in data lines, drivers, and nodes, while keeping controller backups, scene libraries, and as-built control records up to date.
  • Contribute to the planning, testing, and eventual rollout of smart lighting control using LoRaWAN, including gateways, nodes, network servers, and a central management system; this is planned for the future and is not yet active on the contract.
  • Configure DALI and DALI-2 drivers, dimming schedules, calendar-based controls, astronomical time settings, and energy/fault telemetry when these systems are introduced.
  • Support feeder pillar monitoring, remote switching, metering integration, commissioning, provisioning, and firmware updates.
  • Produce performance, energy, and fault reports from CMS data to support KPI and SLA reporting once the smart system is operational.
  • Run lighting operations and maintenance for underpasses and tunnels in accordance with CIE 88 and BS 5489, including threshold, transition, interior, and exit zones.
  • Manage staged daytime and night-time dimming, luminance controllers, L20 sensors, and traffic-responsive control logic.
  • Check emergency and standby lighting, UPS-backed circuits, and integration with tunnel SCADA, ventilation, and incident response systems where applicable.
  • Verify luminance, uniformity, and flicker-free performance through planned inspections and measurements.
  • Lead fault diagnosis, planned preventive maintenance, and corrective work across street, decorative, and tunnel lighting assets on the 29 expressway network.
  • Supervise subcontractors and in-house teams, review work orders in the asset management platform, and ensure quality standards and SLA targets are met.
  • Prepare technical documentation, method statements, risk assessments, and as-built records, and support trials, retrofits, and the HPS-to-LED conversion initiative.
  • Follow electrical safety rules, permit-to-work procedures, and Ashghal HSE requirements at all times.

Technical Expertise Required

  • Hands-on capability with DMX512 and RDM for decorative lighting control, address troubleshooting, and scene programming.
  • Knowledge of LoRaWAN-based smart street lighting systems, including gateways, nodes, network servers, and CMS platforms.
  • Ability to work with DALI and DALI-2 driver configuration, dimming logic, scheduling, and energy/fault reporting.
  • Understanding of tunnel lighting control principles, including CIE 88 stage dimming and luminance control.
  • Familiarity with photometric verification standards such as BS 5489, CIE 115, and EN 13201.
  • Working knowledge of low-voltage distribution, feeder pillars, cabling, protection, metering, and earthing.
  • Ability to use CMS analytics, KPI/SLA dashboards, and asset/work order management systems for reporting and tracking.

Qualifications and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field is required. The role calls for at least six years of relevant experience in street, decorative, and tunnel lighting. Experience with performance-based or highways maintenance contracts is preferred. MMUP/UPDA electrical registration is an advantage, and a valid Qatar driving licence is also preferred. Strong reporting ability and confidence working with asset management and data analysis tools are important.

Team Interface

This role sits within the Electrical and Street Lighting Department and reports to the Electrical and Street Lighting Manager, who in turn reports to the Project Manager. The engineer works closely with duty engineers, subcontractor teams, and the client’s representatives, and coordinates with traffic management, tunnel operations, and SCADA teams for activities affecting underpass and tunnel systems.

Additional Notes

The role combines operational delivery with technical oversight across a large expressway network and includes both current duties and planned future scope. Some technologies, such as the LoRaWAN smart lighting platform, are described as future implementation items rather than systems currently in operation.
