About HealthCorps

HealthCorps is a nationwide nonprofit focused on helping communities address health-related challenges through programs for teens that combine education, leadership, and service learning. A core part of the model is near-peer mentorship: the organization works with colleges and universities to place college-age mentors in schools, where they serve as relatable role models and encourage students to become positive forces in their families, schools, and neighborhoods. The work is built on the belief that limited access to health education can create long-term social, emotional, and physical harm.

The organization’s culture is shaped by mission focus, an entrepreneurial approach, a belief that people are the greatest strength, strong teamwork, and a commitment to empowering change both internally and in the communities it serves.

Role Overview

This position acts as the link between curriculum creation and on-the-ground program delivery. HealthCorps serves tens of thousands of students each year with content around nutrition, mental health, and fitness, and this role helps ensure that the curriculum is delivered effectively by college mentors.

As the Learning & Development Specialist, you will lead mentor training and development while partnering across teams to keep the experience high quality. You will help mentors become confident and capable facilitators, and you will also strengthen their understanding of the program operations around them, including activity logs, proof of programming, photos, stories, and communication with sites. You will work with the curriculum team to review activities before they go live so that expectations are realistic for the time, environment, and preparation mentors have. Mentors work in both classroom and club-based settings with middle and high school students, so the training approach needs to support multiple audience types and engagement levels.

The role also supports the mentors’ broader professional growth. Many of them are pre-health students preparing for careers in medicine, public health, or healthcare, so the coaching and training provided here will influence both their time at HealthCorps and how they approach future professional roles.

You will report to the Manager of Mentor Experience and work closely with curriculum, program, and evaluation teams.

What You’ll Do

  • Create and lead onboarding that prepares mentors for different delivery settings, including how to run strong sessions, engage a range of student ages, and respond effectively when plans change.
  • Build continuous development opportunities that help mentors grow in confidence and skill through office hours, live monthly sessions, and coaching touchpoints.
  • Produce practical training materials for mentors, such as videos, step-by-step guides, templates, and quick-reference tools.
  • Review new lessons and activities before rollout to check clarity, supply needs, and whether they can realistically fit into a 60-minute period.
  • Share feedback that helps the curriculum team shape content for real-world use.
  • Convert curriculum into mentor-ready training that explains how to actually deliver the lesson in practice.
  • Work with Regional Program Managers who supervise mentors by providing training resources while they handle local support and accountability.
  • Collaborate with the data team to identify what is and isn’t working, including activities mentors struggle with and where fidelity scores decline.
  • Design training in formats that suit college students, such as short videos, text-based guidance, push notifications, and interactive modules.
  • Test new learning formats, including a mentor training podcast, short video tips, and LMS-based modules.
  • Stay informed on what keeps this generation of mentors engaged and motivated.
  • Spend about 10% to 15% of your time in the field observing mentors, speaking with them about their experience, and using those insights to improve training.

Additional Position Details

This is a full-time salaried role with a pay range of $50,000 to $55,000 per year and a comprehensive benefits package. Final compensation will depend on factors such as qualifications, skills, competencies, experience, and location.

The organization also follows relevant state and local nondiscrimination laws in every location where it operates.

Employment terms, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leave, compensation, and training, are all covered by this policy.
