Job description

Overview

You will join Chloros Environmental in Kidderminster and support the laboratory team while working toward a nationally recognised Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. Chloros Environmental, established in 2009, is one of Britain’s rapidly expanding hazardous waste management and recycling businesses, operating across England, Wales, and Scotland. The company works with a strong focus on ethical, sustainable waste solutions and on keeping waste away from landfill wherever possible.

Chloros Environmental is part of GRG Waste UK, a wider waste-to-resource network with a strong sustainability focus, where more than 80% of received waste is recycled or recovered. The business aims to treat employees, customers, waste, and the environment responsibly.

Location: Unit 145, Hartlebury Trading Estate, Elm Dr, Hartlebury, Kidderminster DY10 4JB.

Package

The position offers a salary of £22,000 per year and a 40-hour working week, Monday to Friday, from 8:00am to 4:30pm, including a 30-minute lunch break. Annual leave starts at 21 days and increases by one extra day after each completed year of service, up to 25 days, in addition to UK bank holidays. Benefits also include a 3% company pension contribution, private medical and dental cover, shopping discounts, free parking, and an Employee Assistance Programme with Health Assured.

Role purpose

This apprenticeship gives you the chance to earn while you learn, building practical laboratory experience alongside formal training. You will support the Laboratory Chemist by helping the lab run smoothly, keeping equipment and storage areas in good condition, maintaining consumable and reagent stock, and ensuring testing and reporting are completed accurately, safely, and on time.

What you will do

  • Keep the laboratory area clean, tidy, and well organised at all times.
  • Support efficient sample processing so analysis is completed accurately and within deadlines, following the Laboratory Chemist’s direction.
  • Manage sample storage, stock control, and disposal arrangements where needed.
  • Monitor laboratory consumables and other supplies, checking inventory levels and anticipating future needs.
  • Ensure analytical results and other laboratory outputs are reported promptly to the correct people in the business.
  • Escalate any faults or defects with equipment, including likely repair or replacement timescales.
  • Carry out cleaning and calibration of laboratory equipment when required.
  • Prepare samples for dispatch to external laboratories when instructed.
  • Support chemists with waste sampling when materials arrive on site.

About you

The employer is looking for someone with a strong work ethic, a keen eye for detail, and a positive attitude. Good communication and time management are important, along with flexibility to support beyond your main duties when needed. You should be comfortable using Office software such as Word and Excel, happy to help in outdoor areas of the business, willing to get stuck in, and not mind working in hands-on conditions.

Experience and background

Previous science experience may be useful but is not required. Applicants from any background are welcome, including school or college leavers and people looking to retrain. The key expectations are enthusiasm, curiosity, a proactive approach, and a willingness to learn and grow in the role.

Qualifications and apprenticeship details

The programme is designed for people who are ready to build new knowledge and skills. The most successful apprentices are those who want to learn more about the sector, are honest about what they already know, can reflect on their progress, and are eager to develop quickly.

Over 20 months, you will combine day-to-day work with structured training delivered by expert tutors at Tiro. Learning will include online sessions, in-person training, practical activities, applied assignments, and support from a dedicated workplace mentor. You will spend at least 6 hours per week on off-the-job training.

By completing the apprenticeship, you can develop the skills needed to progress as a laboratory technician, gain confidence in laboratory testing, and work toward professional recognition such as Registered Science Technician (RSciTech). There may also be future routes into higher-level study, including degree apprenticeships in Biology, Materials, or Chemistry.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet UK apprenticeship rules. You need to be over 16, not in full-time education, have lived in the UK for the past 3 years, and have the right to work in the UK. If you already hold a Level 3, degree, or equivalent higher-level qualification in a closely related subject, or if you have significant relevant experience, you may not qualify for apprenticeship funding because the programme is intended for people who need to upskill or retrain.

Additional information

The apprenticeship combines practical work and structured study so that you gain real-world scientific experience in a professional laboratory or technical setting. Training is delivered through a blended model that includes live sessions, online learning, and workplace practice.
