About the Role

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas is hiring for a Laboratory Technician 1 within Student Wellness. This is a classified, full-time, on-site position based in Las Vegas, Nevada, with a 100% FTE assignment.

What You Will Do

  • Carry out venipuncture in line with CLSI standards.
  • Receive, prepare, and handle lab specimens according to training, policy, and procedure.
  • Complete laboratory requisitions with all required supporting information and documentation.
  • Perform waived and moderately complex testing accurately, precisely, and within required timelines while following State and CLIA rules.
  • Maintain laboratory quality control practices and support quality assurance activities.
  • Record and communicate test outcomes promptly and correctly according to established procedures.
  • Use computer systems effectively in clinical and laboratory settings, including electronic health records and the laboratory information system.
  • Track follow-up on test results under the direction of healthcare providers.
  • Assist with laboratory quality assessment projects.
  • Operate standard lab equipment and select specialized equipment as needed.
  • Take part in continuing education and in-service training.
  • Follow standard precautions, aseptic technique, and infection control practices.
  • Interpret and apply written procedures and guidelines in day-to-day work.
  • Work cooperatively with supervisors, team members, university staff, external agencies, and the public.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies in coordination with the healthcare team.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent plus at least two years of laboratory experience involving a range of lab procedures, or an equivalent mix of education and experience.

This role also requires a Nevada State Office Lab Assistant or Lab Assistant License, a high school diploma, and experience in a clinical laboratory and phlebotomy setting gained in a reference lab, hospital, military facility, or physician's office.

Preferred Background

Experience in a physician office laboratory, especially in medical assisting and laboratory testing, is preferred.

Special Conditions and Screening

  • Some positions in this series are considered public-safety sensitive under NRS 284.4066 and may require pre-employment testing for controlled substances.
  • Some roles require a State of Nevada Laboratory Assistant/Office Laboratory License issued by the Division of Public and Behavioral Health under NRS 652.080.
  • All candidates must pass a background screening.
  • This position may require a criminal background check for the selected hire.
  • Employment documents will be used to verify academic credentials; if verification is not possible, an official transcript of the highest degree may need to be submitted within 30 days of the first day of employment.
  • References will be checked during the appropriate stage of recruitment.
  • Applicants for some Nevada System of Higher Education roles may need to demonstrate job-related task performance during hiring.

Compensation

The starting salary is Grade 25 CBA C, Step 1, with an annual pay of $43,054.56. Initial appointments to classified positions typically begin at Step 1 of the assigned grade.
