Role overview

Stepan Pasadena is looking for a Lab Technician to support quality control by testing incoming raw materials, in-process samples, finished batches, and outgoing shipments. The role follows established quality and safety procedures and is based in Pasadena, Texas.

What you will do

  • Carry out routine chemical and physical testing on raw materials, intermediates, and finished goods in line with ISO 9001 and the Stepan quality system, then interpret results and recommend product adjustments when needed.
  • Investigate test or equipment issues, record and share findings with supervisors and relevant contacts, and coordinate with external parties when corrections are needed under ISO 9001.
  • Mix, prepare, and standardize solutions and reagents, and handle laboratory housekeeping tasks such as disposing of samples and broken glass containers.
  • Maintain strong 5S practices and lab safety standards at all times.
  • Keep precise documentation of test data, procedures, results, equipment servicing, and calibration in lab logbooks, spreadsheets, SAP, MiniTab, and certificates of analysis as required.
  • Use and maintain lab instruments, ensuring they are calibrated and functioning properly.
  • Follow all safety rules and procedures when working with chemicals and laboratory equipment.
  • Help resolve quality and production-related issues.
  • Support environmental, health, and safety programs, policies, and regulations.
  • Work as an hourly employee during business hours for the first 5 months, then move to 12-hour rotating shifts based on manufacturing needs.
  • Be available for some weekends and holidays.
  • Take on other job-related tasks and projects as assigned.
  • Complete additional training, including regulatory and safety instruction, as needed to support quality and EH&S goals.
  • Actively take part in safety, quality, and waste programs, and attend safety and shift meetings.
  • Contribute to departmental improvement teams and share ideas to improve infrastructure and work processes.
  • Join daily production meetings and batch record reviews under ISO 9001.
  • Assist with round-robin studies, sample packing/labeling/shipment, and other miscellaneous laboratory duties and projects.

What we are looking for

  • Strong hands-on experience using Gas Chromatography (GC) instruments.
  • At least 3 to 5 years of laboratory experience, with specific exposure to gas chromatography techniques.
  • Familiarity with other lab equipment such as FTIR, NIR, titrators, and lab condensers.
  • Experience performing analytical tests such as Acid Value, Hydroxyl Value, 1,4-Dioxane, Amine Value, Total Ester, and Water Content.
  • Background in analytical chemistry and Good Laboratory Practices.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong organization skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Safety-focused, dependable, responsible, and reliable.
  • Ability to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Solid understanding of chemical laboratory operations.
  • Ability to review data, make decisions, and suggest improvements.

Education

  • High school diploma with relevant experience, or a BS degree in Chemistry.

Compensation

The pay rate is $37.00 to $40.00 per hour. The final offer will depend on experience relevant to the role and will be a key part of the compensation decision.
