Job description

About the role

Onward Repairs is hiring a Joiner to support its expanding repairs team. The role focuses on delivering reliable property maintenance work to a high standard, mainly in customers’ homes and, where needed, in void homes and for other clients.

What you will do

You will assess repair needs, choose the most cost-effective solution, organise materials, and complete work efficiently while keeping customers, colleagues, and other stakeholders informed. The role requires you to maintain adequate stock, including van stock, and to plan your workload so service delivery remains smooth and effective.

You will also be responsible for producing accurate job updates on PDA devices, keeping related records up to date, and sharing access details, materials used, job progress, and any follow-on actions.

Customer service and quality

The position requires a strong customer-first approach, with an emphasis on completing work promptly and to a consistently high standard. You will liaise with clients, customers, and colleagues about access arrangements, safe working methods, and repair progress, while ensuring workmanship meets required quality levels.

Health, safety, and equipment

You must work in line with all health and safety rules, relevant legislation, and safe working procedures, while also helping promote a culture of safety. The job includes operating light machinery, plant, and powered hand tools safely, along with looking after the daily condition and safe use of the company vehicle assigned to you.

Experience and qualifications

Applicants need a strong understanding of building construction, building components, trade practices, and relevant building regulations. Experience in a customer-facing service role, a target-driven environment, and a repairs-focused setting is important. Previous work in commercial or domestic property maintenance, social housing, and use of PDA or mobile working technology would be an advantage.

Essential qualifications include a minimum Level 2 NVQ or equivalent in Joinery, relevant experience, and a valid CSCS card. Additional useful training includes health and safety qualifications for the construction sector, asbestos awareness, power tool training, manual handling, COSHH and PPE training, and access equipment or working-at-height training such as mobile work platforms.

Working pattern

The role includes an out-of-hours standby rota, which may involve evening and weekend working. This is separate from the contractual hours and comes with extra pay and compensation, to be discussed at interview.

What the employer offers

The package includes a salary of £35,300 per year, which works out at £18.10 per hour, along with 32 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, making 40 paid days off per year or the equivalent of 8 weeks. You may also gain extra leave through service or by using the holiday purchase scheme.

Benefits include immediate entry into the pension scheme with matched contributions of up to 10%, access to Salary Finance for short- and long-term loans plus savings support, and a flexible working culture with family-friendly policies. You will also have access to a cash plan that can be extended to family members and includes dental, optical, physiotherapy, 24-hour private GP access, and more.

Additional benefits cover paid leave for sickness, maternity, paternity, and adoption; up to £150 per year through the Learning for Life scheme; discounts and cashback across retail, automotive, holidays, and cycle to work; plus career development support through training and qualifications.
