Job description

About Severn Trent

Severn Trent serves millions of homes and businesses across the centre of the UK every day of the year. The organisation values people, welcomes different backgrounds and perspectives, and believes that inclusive teams deliver better outcomes for customers and communities.

Role overview

The company is hiring a Job Build Technician to join the Workforce Planning & Optimisation team at its Pride Park office in Derby. This position focuses on preparing compliant permits and work packs so operational teams can complete emergency and planned repair, renewal, and installation work safely and efficiently.

The role is strongly target-driven, with a focus on building jobs correctly the first time and helping crews remain optimised. It also requires regular coordination with internal teams and external parties to secure the approvals and supporting arrangements needed for each job.

What the role involves

You will work closely with a broad set of stakeholders, including external suppliers, highway authorities, field managers, operatives, and local planning authorities. Your day-to-day work will include gathering the right information, arranging traffic management and other constraints, and ensuring that permits and packs are completed to a compliant standard.

The job supports a 24/7 operational environment, so flexibility and the ability to respond quickly to urgent work are important.

Shift pattern and working hours

This position follows an 11-week rota within a working window of 06:30 to 20:00. Most shifts fall on weekdays, with only 2 weekends worked across the 11-week cycle.

  • Early shift: 06:30 to 14:30 for 2 weeks out of 11
  • Day shift: 08:00 to 16:00 for 7 weeks out of 11
  • Late shift: 12:00 to 20:00 for 2 weeks out of 11
  • Weekend shifts run from 06:30 to 16:00
  • On Fridays, early and day shifts finish 30 minutes earlier, while late shifts start 30 minutes later

Workplace

You will be based at the modern Pride Park site in Derby, with free parking available and convenient access via local transport options.

What Severn Trent is looking for

The ideal candidate will bring a methodical, analytical approach and strong organisation skills. Accuracy is vital, as the role involves producing compliant permits and work packs that enable work to proceed smoothly and first time.

Severn Trent is also looking for someone who is motivated by goals, comfortable working under pressure, and capable of switching priorities when emergency jobs need immediate attention. Strong communication and stakeholder management skills are essential.

The company also welcomes candidates who may not have every technical requirement but who bring the right attitude, positivity, and a willingness to contribute to a larger purpose.

Benefits and rewards

This role comes with a competitive salary and a wide range of benefits, along with training and development opportunities through Severn Trent’s Academy. The organisation also offers support for career growth, wellbeing, and community impact.

  • Annual salary of £26,412.76 plus weekend working allowance
  • Alternative salary figure listed as £25,396.88 plus weekend working allowance
  • 25 days of annual leave plus bank holidays
  • Option to buy or sell up to 5 holiday days each year
  • Annual bonus of up to £1,500 based on company performance
  • Pension arrangement where employer contributions are doubled up to 15% when the employee contributes 7.5%
  • Sharesave scheme to buy Severn Trent Plc shares at a discounted price
  • Dedicated learning and development through the Academy
  • Electric vehicle scheme and retail offers
  • Family-friendly policies, including a year of paid leave for maternity and adoption
  • Two volunteering days per year
