Job description
About Airways
Airways manages New Zealand’s airspace and delivers a range of aviation services including air traffic control, surveillance, communications, flight inspection, mapping, and airspace design. The organisation works with government agencies, regulators, airlines, airports, and the wider general aviation sector to help ensure that aircraft, passengers, and cargo reach their destinations safely. Its work is guided by the values of Safety, One Airways, Excellence, and Success.
Airways is structured around operational business groups supported by governance and corporate services teams. The Technology Group oversees the delivery and management of technology services across the air navigation environment, including air traffic management, security, national networking, operations and maintenance, specialist support, IT, service management, project delivery, flight inspection, and engineering.
The operations and maintenance function supports Airways’ ground-based aviation infrastructure, communications, navigation, and surveillance systems through installation, maintenance, and fault response. Teams operate across New Zealand and are backed by a 24/7 national operations centre that monitors system performance, reliability, availability, and compliance with service expectations.
About the role
Airways is hiring an Intermediate or Senior Technician to join the Auckland Communications, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) Maintenance Team on a permanent full-time basis, following an internal promotion. Based at the Auckland Technical Centre and reporting to the Auckland Airport Centre Team Leader, the role focuses on keeping operational systems functional, available, and reliable.
- Carry out fault diagnosis and repair work.
- Complete planned and preventative maintenance tasks.
- Install CNS equipment and related systems.
The role may involve occasional night and weekend work. It also requires working outdoors in a range of weather and environmental conditions to help maintain the safety and reliability of CNS infrastructure.
A full set of duties and further role details are provided in the position description.
About you
Airways is looking for a capable technician who is self-driven, cooperative, physically fit, technically strong, and committed to quality outcomes. You should be comfortable working in a safety-critical environment and able to remain effective under time pressure.
Required background and experience
- A qualification in engineering or a related discipline, preferably a Bachelor of Engineering Technology, NZCE Telecommunications, Supplementary Radio Technicians Certificate, or Electro Technology Diploma in Telecommunications, or an equivalent qualification.
- Experience working with technical systems and equipment, ideally radio systems; exposure to air navigation aids, radar, and power systems is an advantage.
- Experience in building and site management, including identifying hazards and carrying out risk analysis and mitigation.
- A strong safety-first approach, good personal health, and the ability to climb structures, work at heights, and operate in varying weather conditions.
- A current New Zealand driver licence and the ability to drive well enough to obtain an airside driving licence.
- Competence with computers and the MS Office suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
- The flexibility to handle tasks with deadlines and pressure while maintaining a professional standard.
- The ability to work effectively in a changing team and business environment, collaborate well with others, show resilience and adaptability, take ownership, and deliver results.
Preferred experience
- An Electrical Services Technician (EAS) practising licence is an advantage.
- Previous experience working with teams and contractors on projects and operational tasks is beneficial.
- Strong operational awareness and situational judgement are useful for this role.
Offer and benefits
Airways offers a competitive package that includes a base salary and a superannuation contribution of up to 11% of earnings, subject to terms and conditions. The organisation also provides five weeks of annual leave, enhanced parental leave, strong learning and development opportunities, and clear pathways for professional growth and career progression.
You will be working alongside experienced technicians and engineers in an organisation known internationally for innovation and success.
Application and employment conditions
To apply, candidates should submit a CV and cover letter through the Airways careers site or Seek. Applicants must be legally eligible to work in New Zealand.
