Job description
About ProPublica
ProPublica is a nonprofit, independent newsroom focused on investigative reporting in the public interest.
Role Overview
ProPublica is hiring an interactive designer to build story experiences that have real-world impact. You will partner with award-winning journalists to shape visually rich narratives, from illustrated features and typographic explainers to immersive multimedia projects. The work will span visual storytelling, interactive journalism, and experimentation with new story forms and graphics approaches.
You will join a newsroom where design plays a central role in the mission and where each day offers the chance to contribute to high-impact journalism.
Reporting and Collaboration
This position reports to the graphics director and works closely with teams across visuals, video, news apps, product, writing, and editing.
What They Are Looking For
The ideal candidate brings several years of relevant design experience, strong visual judgment, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly through sketches and prototypes. You should be comfortable working with journalists, reporters, and editors, and be able to turn complex subjects into clear, compelling audience experiences.
Proficiency in web technologies is important, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. A background in journalism is valuable, and prior reporting experience is considered an advantage. A strong attention to detail, a maker mindset, and enthusiasm for accountability reporting are all important.
The role also calls for strong organization, the ability to balance multiple projects at once, and willingness to travel occasionally for meetings and training.
Candidates with experience in graphics or data visualization are encouraged to apply, even if their previous job title was not designer.
Work Arrangement and Location
This is a full-time position with benefits. ProPublica is headquartered in New York, but remote candidates based in the United States will be considered. The organization also has offices in New York City, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Phoenix, and Berkeley, California.
Compensation
The expected annual salary range for this role is $110,000 to $130,000. Final compensation will depend on experience, achievements, and location. The listed range is an estimate and is not a cap on future pay.
Eligibility
Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. ProPublica also welcomes applicants whose backgrounds or career paths do not fit the usual mold, and encourages candidates to share relevant strengths even if they do not meet every stated requirement.
Application Materials
Applicants should submit three portfolio projects. If a portfolio is not available, links or screenshots are acceptable. For each project, candidates should explain their own contribution, the behind-the-scenes work they handled, how they supported collaborators, and what they would improve in hindsight. The application should also include what succeeded, what did not, and how those outcomes related to the project goals.
Additional Information
Applications will be reviewed as they are received, and candidates will be considered while the posting remains active. Questions can be sent by email. Phone inquiries are not accepted.
ProPublica is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity. The newsroom is working to better reflect the communities it covers and especially encourages applications from women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities. All employment decisions are made without regard to legally protected characteristics.
