Role overview

Elstree Immersive Experience Ltd is appointing an Independent Non Executive Director (iNED) to join its board in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. The appointment is for an initial three-year term, with the option to renew once for a further three years, giving a maximum tenure of six years.

The board role is expected to take around 12 to 15 days each year and includes attendance at monthly board meetings, preparation, and involvement in at least one board working group. The company expects that additional time may be needed during key stages such as pre-opening, major gateway decisions, or periods of heightened risk.

Remuneration for the position is a directors' allowance of £3,836, with reasonable expenses also reimbursed.

About the organisation

Elstree Immersive Experience Ltd is a new immersive entertainment venue being developed in Borehamwood, supported by Hertsmere Borough Council. The venue is scheduled to open in late 2026 and is intended to deliver immersive experiences, live performance and interactive storytelling connected to the UK screen production sector.

The business is a council-owned special purpose vehicle, so public investment, robust governance and commercial delivery are central to how it operates.

What the role involves

The board is looking for an independent voice that can offer challenge, scrutiny and specialist insight while the company progresses through fit-out, launch and its early operational period.

You will report to the Chair of the EIE Board, remain accountable to the board as a whole, and support the shareholder, Hertsmere Borough Council, through the board's reporting structure.

Key responsibilities

  • Offer thoughtful and constructive challenge to executive and council-appointed directors on strategy, results, risk and governance.
  • Review management accounts, cashflow projections and the risk register with an independent eye.
  • Take an active role in at least one board working group, ideally Finance or Sites.
  • Provide impartial guidance on matters involving conflicts of interest when needed.
  • Promote strong governance standards across the board.
  • Serve as a trusted sounding board to the Managing Director outside formal board meetings where appropriate.

Time commitment

The expected commitment is about 12 to 15 days per year. This includes board meetings, currently held monthly, preparation time, and participation in at least one working group. Some extra involvement may be needed at peak moments such as pre-opening, gateway approvals or escalated risk situations.

Essential requirements

  • Experience serving at senior board level, in governance roles, or as a non-executive director.
  • Strong financial understanding, including the ability to assess management accounts and cashflow information.
  • Working knowledge of risk management and audit.
  • True independence from Hertsmere Borough Council, EIE delivery partners and suppliers.
  • Support for the Nolan Principles of public life.

Desirable experience

  • Background in creative industries, visitor attractions, leisure or entertainment.
  • Experience with council-owned companies, special purpose vehicles or publicly funded organisations.
  • Exposure to start-up businesses or organisations in a pre-opening phase.
