Role summary

Reporting to the Clinical Practice Leader for Speech Language Pathology and/or Audiology, the Hearing Screener is responsible for carrying out newborn hearing screening procedures. The position involves identifying infants who meet screening criteria under the Early Hearing Program, completing screenings with computerized equipment, troubleshooting devices, handling patient documents, and sharing results with families and other professionals. The role also supports awareness efforts around hearing loss and works closely with families, healthcare staff, agencies, and community partners to support newborns and their families.

Compensation

The pay rate for this position is CAD 29.52 per hour.

Key duties

  • Determine which newborns qualify for hearing screening by applying Early Hearing Program criteria and site procedures while assessing infant status and speaking with caregivers.
  • Carry out infant hearing tests by preparing the skin, placing electrodes, fitting earphones or tips, and operating computerized screening tools.
  • Record screening outcomes in the chart using the appropriate pass or refer designation, and complete all required program records through computer-based data entry.
  • Check screening equipment regularly, replace batteries, clean and disinfect devices, and arrange servicing or recalibration when needed.
  • Update, revise, and distribute patient-facing materials such as brochures and family correspondence.
  • Review infant risk factors with nursing staff and observe the newborn to confirm whether preset hearing-risk indicators are present.
  • Share screening outcomes and general hearing information with families and professionals, and encourage follow-up attendance by phone, fax, and email.
  • Track supplies and inventory, report shortages, and prepare requisition paperwork when stock needs replenishing.
  • Maintain workload records and submit both computerized and manual statistical reports.
  • Carry out additional related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications and experience

Applicants should have completed the BC Early Hearing Screening Program and bring at least one year of recent related experience, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and experience.

Required abilities

  • Typing speed of 45 words per minute.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Comfort operating relevant equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform the duties of the role.
