Job description
Role overview
This opportunity is for a Head of Talent at a nonprofit startup backed by $25 million in funding. The organization is focused on building a global workforce for AI safety and biosecurity.
Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $150,000 to $200,000.
Location
This role is based in San Francisco, USA and is intended to be worked onsite.
What this role is about
You will take ownership of a major hiring push aimed at tripling the team and bringing in 20 outstanding hires within the next 12 months. Reporting closely to the CEO, you will build recruiting processes and systems from the ground up, study the AI safety talent ecosystem, and actively close highly sought-after candidates from leading AI labs and startups.
Why this opportunity stands out
- You will work directly with the CEO and have broad freedom to design hiring operations and employer branding from the beginning.
- Your work will contribute to a mission with significant philanthropic impact by helping shape the team that trains and places thousands of researchers into organizations such as Anthropic and DeepMind.
- The startup has strong financial support, having raised $25 million in 2025 to grow a world-class workforce focused on reducing risks from advanced technology.
Key responsibilities
- Build a strong sourcing engine through cold outreach, industry events, and established networks to create a pipeline of 50 or more qualified candidates in Ashby.
- Manage the full candidate journey and keep first-offer acceptance at 80% or higher through compelling, mission-led closing.
- Speed up the hiring cycle so that the median time from first conversation to accepted offer is four weeks or less.
Ideal candidate profile
- You have a strong history of winning over elite candidates in competitive markets without depending only on large compensation offers.
- You have sharp judgment for identifying high-agency, mission-aligned people who perform well in fast-moving, uncertain startup settings.
- You can quickly map talent landscapes and ideally already understand the AI safety, biosecurity, or effective altruism communities.
About the hiring process
The role is being recruited by an AI recruiter on behalf of a customer. The next step is a conversation with Jack. The company says this is a real open role, though some details may be kept anonymous in the listing.
Additional information
Jack is described as an AI assistant that gets to know candidates, supports job search and interview preparation, and surfaces suitable opportunities. Jill is described as an AI recruiter who learns what companies need, recruits from Jack's network, and introduces strong matches to the employer. The service is presented as free for job seekers.
Application notes
The employer indicates that they sometimes anonymize job postings, which may limit the amount of detail shown in the listing.
