Job description

Role overview

This opportunity is for a Head of Strategy in Australia’s energy sector, based in the Greater Sydney Area. The position sits at the crossroads of business, technology, innovation, and government, with a mandate to help shape priorities for the shift toward renewable energy and a more sustainable future.

The role is intended for a highly capable strategist who can tackle complex challenges, create meaningful impact, and turn strategic thinking into practical execution. It requires someone who can balance a rigorous strategic lens with real-world delivery constraints while strengthening both external influence and internal alignment.

What you will do

  • Own and maintain strategic coherence across impact team strategies and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Develop insights and recommendations, build consensus with the SteerCo and Board, and ensure materials are ready for decision-making.
  • Continuously reassess strategy work and adjust priorities by expanding, reducing, stopping, or postponing effort as needed.
  • Work closely with Impact Leads and senior stakeholders to convert strategy into action.
  • Support effective strategic decisions and help resolve competing priorities across teams and initiatives.
  • Partner with the Chief Strategy Officer on high-priority strategic projects and raise resourcing or support needs early.
  • Lead the annual Board Strategy Workshop process with the CSO, CEO, CIO, and Board.
  • Manage and grow the Strategy team, including hiring, succession planning, capability development, team culture, cadence, and tools.
  • Coach Directors, Senior Managers, and Managers on complex strategy work.
  • Keep a strong external viewpoint and maintain a credible professional network.
  • Plan and coordinate team workload and weekly activity allocation.

What the organisation is looking for

The ideal candidate will be comfortable engaging with senior leaders and board-level stakeholders across functions. A strong focus on team culture, people development, and building an excellent workplace for the Strategy team is also essential.

  • Strong strategic judgement and prioritisation ability.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills across conceptual and analytical challenges, along with a solid grasp of strategy frameworks and methods.
  • Ability to influence stakeholders without formal authority.
  • Experience working with and influencing Board members and senior executives.
  • Demonstrated leadership of senior teams or people.
  • Good understanding of the energy transition landscape.
  • Executive presence supported by substance and credibility.
  • At least 10 years of experience in management consulting or strategy-focused roles.

The search is being run for a highly impactful leadership role in the energy sector. Candidates with deep strategy experience, ideally gained at a top-tier consulting firm or in a similar environment, will be prioritised.
