Role overview
The Head of School – Computing is a senior academic and administrative leadership role at TAG-ME, Curtin University Dubai. This position is responsible for steering the School of Computing’s development, implementation, and management while keeping its academic direction aligned with Curtin’s global standards and institutional objectives. The role works in close partnership with the Director of Learning and Teaching at Curtin University Dubai, academic and professional staff, Curtin University Perth, and students to maintain a collaborative, high-quality learning environment and to support the continued expansion of computing programs at Curtin Dubai.
Leadership and school ownership
- Lead the School of Computing at an overall level and take responsibility for its academic performance, strategic direction, growth, and positioning in the market, in line with Curtin Dubai’s strategy and goals.
- Create and execute a 3 to 5 year plan covering enrolment expansion, program development, research, student outcomes, and engagement with industry.
- Collaborate with the Pro Vice-Chancellor & President, Director – Learning and Teaching, other Heads of School, professional services teams, and Curtin Perth academic leaders to advance institutional and school priorities.
- Develop strong relationships with Curtin Perth faculty leadership, Heads of School, Deans, Unit Coordinators, and other academic colleagues.
- Spot and develop opportunities in high-demand areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Digital Transformation, and similar disciplines to enhance the School’s offering.
- Help grow postgraduate study, micro-credentials, executive education, and other programs that are relevant to industry needs.
- Be responsible for the School’s overall results, including enrolment growth, academic standards, student satisfaction, progression, retention, graduate outcomes, and relevance to industry.
School and program management
- Manage the School of Computing’s daily academic and administrative operations.
- Work closely with Curtin Perth on operational topics, program delivery, unit coordination, curriculum matters, academic governance, and quality assurance.
- Oversee faculty matters such as teaching allocation, workload distribution, and effective delivery of programs across the School.
- Plan curriculum structures, course offerings, units, and academic timetables in consultation with Curtin Perth and other internal stakeholders.
- Ensure programs comply with accreditation, regulatory, and quality assurance expectations, and contribute to related processes when required.
- Lead program reviews, evaluations, and performance analysis to identify improvements and support ongoing enhancement.
- Track the health, performance, and sustainability of programs, including enrolment levels, progression, resourcing, and student outcomes.
- Recognize academic, operational, regulatory, and reputational risks affecting the School and put mitigation actions in place.
Academic leadership
- Guide the delivery and continuous improvement of programs within the School of Computing.
- Design, implement, and monitor School-level academic procedures and operating practices that comply with Curtin and local regulatory requirements.
- Provide leadership for academic delivery, academic quality, and readiness across each term.
- Maintain a strong standard of academic quality in line with applicable regulatory requirements, internal policies, and external or professional accreditations.
- Take part in curriculum review and academic planning before every study period, working with Curtin Perth and internal stakeholders.
- Lead resource planning for the School, including staffing, laboratories, equipment, and other academic infrastructure needed to support growth and quality delivery.
- Coach and support faculty in teaching, research, and scholarly work, while promoting their professional growth and career development.
- Manage School resources and departmental staff strategically so they align with school, campus, and university-wide objectives.
- Run School meetings, academic discussions, and collaborative initiatives that encourage alignment, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Promote a culture built on academic excellence, collegiality, innovation, accountability, and student-focused practice.
Teaching and learning
- Teach lectures, tutorials, practicals, workshops, seminars, demonstrations, and laboratory sessions in the relevant subject area.
- Prepare, administer, and assess exams, quizzes, assignments, projects, laboratory tasks, and other assessment activities according to approved academic standards.
- Give clear, timely, and constructive feedback to help student learning and progression.
- Keep regular consultation hours and provide mentoring, academic advice, and support to students.
- Contribute to improving teaching quality, the learning experience, assessment methods, and academic support within the School.
- Support faculty in applying strong teaching practices and handling unit-level administrative responsibilities effectively.
Student support, success, and employability
- Offer academic advising, mentoring, and guidance to students throughout the student lifecycle.
- Handle student concerns appropriately, encourage academic success and engagement, and refer wellbeing matters when required.
- Develop and back initiatives that improve student engagement, retention, progression, and the overall student experience.
- Plan and promote internships, industry placements, capstone work, applied learning, guest lectures, seminars, workshops, competitions, and similar experiential activities.
- Support approaches that enhance employability, career readiness, and graduate outcomes.
- Build a strong School identity and student community through academic, professional, and co-curricular involvement.
Research and scholarly activity
- Maintain an active research and scholarly profile relevant to the role and discipline.
- Encourage research collaboration across Curtin Dubai, Curtin Perth, and external academic and industry partners.
- Promote interdisciplinary and applied research, funded projects, industry-supported initiatives, and scholarly outputs that increase the School’s profile and impact.
- Help build a strong research culture within the School, including mentoring faculty in research and scholarly development.
Industry engagement, marketing, growth, and outreach
- Create a culture of innovation and industry connection, embedding work-integrated learning and professional engagement across School programs and activities.
- Build and maintain partnerships with technology firms, start-ups, innovation hubs, professional bodies, community organisations, government stakeholders, and academic institutions.
- Strengthen industry involvement through internships, advisory boards, applied projects, certifications, guest speakers, research partnerships, and employer collaboration.
- Partner with Marketing, Recruitment, Admissions, and Student Services to support recruitment, conversion, retention, and growth across School programs.
- Contribute to growth plans, including outreach activities, lead generation, enrolment campaigns, and new market opportunities.
- Represent the School and Curtin Dubai at open days, school visits, webinars, exhibitions, industry events, and corporate meetings.
- Serve as an academic ambassador to prospective students, parents, schools, agents, alumni, employers, regulators, and other stakeholders.
- Support promotional content, thought leadership, market-facing academic communication, and other initiatives that strengthen the School’s visibility and reputation.
