Role overview
The Head of Nutrition at San Diego FC is responsible for leading every nutrition-related program for the club’s athletes. Reporting to the Director of Human Performance, this position focuses on building performance-driven meal strategies, supporting recovery, and partnering with the wider performance and medical staff to help athletes perform at their best.
Core responsibilities
- Create individualized nutrition strategies that support performance, recovery, and overall athlete health.
- Assess athletes’ dietary needs and provide practical, personalized guidance.
- Track eating patterns and help ensure athletes follow their nutrition plans consistently.
- Partner with chefs and catering teams to design meals and snacks that align with athlete requirements.
- Teach athletes about nutrition, hydration, and supplement practices that support elite performance.
- Keep up with current sports nutrition research and use evidence-based methods in day-to-day work.
- Coordinate with physicians, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals to support complete athlete care.
- Keep detailed and accurate records of nutrition plans, assessments, and athlete progress.
- Run workshops and educational sessions for athletes and staff on nutrition-related topics.
- Attend games and practices to make sure nutrition needs are covered during training and competition.
- Manage nutrition support for both pre-season and in-season training programs.
Qualifications and experience
- A master’s degree in nutrition or a closely related discipline is required.
- Professional dietitian licensure is preferred, along with board certification in sports dietetics.
- At least 3 years of experience working in elite sports is required.
- Strong understanding of nutrition principles as they apply to athletic performance is essential.
Skills and competencies
- Strong spoken and written communication skills.
- Ability to use nutrition-related technology tools effectively.
- Experience working with data management systems for secure collection, storage, and practical use of information.
- Excellent organization and time management abilities.
- Spanish/English bilingual ability, or other multilingual capability, is an advantage.
