Job description

Overview

This is a permanent opportunity with a substantial pipeline of work extending beyond the next five years. It is suited to someone who wants to develop a career by supporting the delivery of advanced engineering projects within a fast-moving and collaborative environment.

You will be part of a lively, flexible, and cross-functional team delivering work safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the expected quality level. The role also offers access to structured career development programmes designed to strengthen leadership potential, along with the chance to work with highly capable teams. A competitive compensation package is available, with scope for discussion.

About the Company

Kirby Group Engineering is an international, multi-disciplinary engineering services contractor and a major provider of high-value engineering solutions for well-known blue-chip clients. With operations in Ireland, the UK, and Europe, the business is particularly active in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, data centres, and power transmission and distribution. The organisation is known for an innovative, collaborative, and performance-driven culture, and it focuses on developing talent while recognising strong performance.

Role Purpose

As a Junior Estimator, you will support ongoing growth and contribute to the company’s strong reputation for estimating excellence. Working closely with the senior estimator, you will help deliver best-in-class estimating support across the tendering cycle. The role is intended to build your technical, commercial, and people leadership capability through professional and personal development.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the senior estimator from tender receipt through to the pre-contract stage.
  • Prepare cost estimates by completing take-offs from the scope of work and entering data into the estimating system, then checking outputs for accuracy and completeness.
  • Interpret technical specifications and employer requirements for design-and-build installations.
  • Coordinate the tender process with different departments and ensure submissions are completed on time.
  • Help prepare the technical submission, including inclusions, exclusions, clarifications, and the programme of works.
  • Oversee quotation requests and assess returned quotations for full compliance.
  • Handle several projects simultaneously.
  • Identify likely risks, challenges, and project issues early, and provide the bid team with solutions and mitigation options.
  • Track submitted tenders and record the associated feedback.
  • After a successful bid, support project handover by briefing the construction team on the estimate, scope, quotations, and offer details to ensure a smooth transition.

Requirements

  • A third-level qualification in Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or equivalent experience from a strong trade background.
  • At least 1 year of experience in the construction industry in a role similar to estimator is preferred.
  • Strong listening skills with the ability to understand information and ideas clearly.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Genuine interest in building a career in estimation.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple responsibilities, and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Understanding of standard operating procedures.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and respond positively to changing requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Additional Information

  • This is a permanent role with work availability secured for more than five years.
  • The package is described as excellent, and there is room for salary negotiation.
  • Applicants can contact the talent acquisition team confidentially for further details about this role or similar Junior Estimator / Assistant Estimator opportunities in Ireland, the UK, or Europe.
