Job description

Role overview

Amey is hiring an on-site General Building Operative for HMP Whatton. This position supports planned and reactive maintenance activity across the prison, helping ensure work is completed safely, compliantly, and on time.

Working pattern and pay

The role is based on 39 hours per week, spread across seven days when a weekend rota applies. Weekend coverage is required one weekend in every three, and this attracts an additional allowance equal to 15% of basic salary. The annual base pay for the role is £28,792.

What the role involves

You will support a team delivering general maintenance and assisting other trades on site. The work includes practical DIY-style tasks, contractor escorting when needed, checking that fixtures, appliances, and surroundings are operating properly, and reporting defects to the Team Leader. The position also includes housekeeping, litter picking, and landscaping duties where required. You may also be asked to carry out other facilities management tasks as directed by the team manager.

The role contributes to local and business zero-carbon initiatives, with an expectation to work in a practical and efficient way that supports carbon reduction where appropriate.

What you need

Applicants should have solid hands-on experience in DIY or general building maintenance. A CITB-related qualification, or something equivalent, is required. You should be willing to learn additional skills and be comfortable working collaboratively as part of a team.

Security and compliance

Prison Security Clearance is required for this post, and support will be provided through that process. A strong focus on health and safety standards is essential across the contract.
