Job description

Role overview

Transportation and Infrastructure with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is seeking an Internal Adjuster to oversee and administer insured and uninsured claims involving core government operations, as well as property and commercial general liability claims tied to government entities. The role supports the Director of General Insurance and Financial Analysis and helps safeguard government property, staff, and the public by applying and tracking appropriate risk controls.

This position focuses mainly on claims that can range from straightforward to highly complex, including property, boiler and machinery, marine, commercial general liability, and aviation losses. It also serves as backup for auto and other road hazard claims handled by the other General Adjuster and Claims Administrator in the division, with workload shared as needed. Work is carried out in coordination with senior leaders, staff, members of the public, insurance brokers, external adjusters, lawyers, contractors, and other stakeholders.

Key duties

  • Administer and manage a broad portfolio of insured and uninsured claims for government-related matters.
  • Handle claims involving property, boiler and machinery, marine, commercial general liability, aviation, auto, and road hazards as assigned.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to move claims forward and resolve issues.
  • Provide informed guidance on insurance, loss, and risk-related matters.
  • Carry out risk assessments and make practical recommendations with follow-up actions.
  • Prepare reports that support risk management planning and decision-making.
  • Step in as backup for the other General Adjuster and Claims Administrator when needed.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

Screening requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in business, with equivalent combinations of education and experience also considered.
  • Hands-on experience adjusting commercial claims across multiple insurance lines such as property, boiler and machinery, marine, commercial general liability, aviation, and automobile.
  • A Level IV Adjuster’s License, or eligibility to obtain one immediately.
  • A Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation, or an equivalent qualification.
  • A Canadian Risk Management (CRM) designation is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with claims management systems or related software is an asset.

Assessment factors

  • Understanding of claims adjusting and insurance policy interpretation.
  • Knowledge of risk management methods and practices.
  • Strong analytical thinking and research capability.
  • Ability to negotiate effectively and work with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Capacity to organize work and manage priorities independently.
  • Professional conduct and judgment.

Conditions of employment

  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • A valid Level IV Adjuster’s License, or immediate eligibility for one, is required.
  • Frequent travel throughout the province may be necessary, sometimes on short notice.
  • The role requires availability to respond to emergencies linked to natural events or other unexpected situations.

Applicant instructions

Applicants must include proof of a valid Level IV Adjuster’s License or confirmation that they are eligible for the license when submitting their application. Applications without this documentation will not move forward in the screening process.
