Job description
Overview
Byte2 is building AI agents that large consumer brands rely on to run complex support and operations work across voice, chat, and email. The company has already secured a $61M Series A and counts DoorDash among its paying customers. Its product vision is to become the default AI platform for enterprise automation, driven by voice superintelligence and real-time agents that can respond with speed, empathy, and scale.
This is a pivotal stage for the business: the company is growing quickly, has product-market traction, and is now looking to expand its team and operational foundations. Engineers and operators here are given meaningful ownership and the chance to have a real impact on millions of end users.
Role Summary
The company is hiring its first dedicated HR professional to establish and run core HR operations. This is a greenfield opportunity for someone who wants to bring structure, consistency, and scalable processes to a function that is currently shared across Operations and the broader business.
The position is highly hands-on and execution-oriented. You will manage the day-to-day HR function, with primary responsibility for employee lifecycle administration, compliance, and coordination with benefits vendors and employment counsel. The immediate focus is on building solid operational basics, with room to help shape broader people programs as the company continues to scale.
Because the company has recently raised funding and is entering a period of rapid expansion, there is strong interest in investing in future people initiatives such as culture, manager support, and employee experience once the core framework is in place.
This role is best suited to someone who is comfortable working independently, likes turning ambiguity into clear process, and is excited to own HR from the ground up while growing alongside the business.
Work Location
This is an on-site role requiring five days per week in San Francisco, specifically in the Dogpatch neighborhood.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will own HR operations end to end and serve as the main internal point of contact for people processes.
- Manage the full employee lifecycle, including onboarding from start to finish, equipment and account setup, orientation, first-week planning, role changes, offboarding, and terminations.
- Keep employment records current and organized, including offer letters, employment contracts, and separation paperwork.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date information in Rippling.
- Act as the internal owner for HR workflows, including coordination with outside vendors and legal counsel.
- Use your understanding of California employment law and in-office workplace requirements to support compliant HR decision-making.
- Handle employee exits and severance processes with fairness, consistency, and sound judgment.
- Work with employment counsel when needed and turn external guidance into repeatable day-to-day practices.
- Lead benefits administration, including health and retirement plans, while managing relationships with brokers and providers.
- Partner with Finance on payroll accuracy and compliance, and step in to lead when needed.
- Track and roll out changing compliance requirements across states as the company expands.
- Create and document HR processes that can scale with the organization.
- Bring structure to areas where procedures are still informal or developing.
Requirements
- 4 to 7 years of HR experience.
- Prior experience as an early or first HR hire in a venture-backed startup.
- Strong familiarity with HRIS platforms; experience with Rippling is preferred.
- Background supporting California-based teams, including knowledge of employment law and in-person workplace considerations.
- Confidence serving as the main HR owner in a fast-moving environment.
- Proven ability to manage employee exits and terminations in a compliant, considerate manner.
- Solid grasp of payroll fundamentals and experience working with payroll vendors.
- A practical, steady, and solutions-focused working style.
- Comfort with autonomy, ambiguity, and shifting priorities.
- Interest in building clarity, structure, and operational discipline as the company grows.
Preferred Experience
- Exposure to performance management program development or support.
- Experience contributing to broader People Ops work such as manager enablement, engagement, or culture initiatives.
- Experience in multi-state or scaling organizations.
Perks & Benefits
- Daily catered lunch.
- Evening meal stipend.
- Wellness allowance of $150 per month for gym access, fitness classes, or mental health support.
- 401(k) retirement plan.
- Commuter benefits.
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
Additional Information
This is a full-time, in-person role. The team is at an inflection point after raising $61M in Series A funding, and the company expects to invest more heavily in people, culture, and employee experience once the core HR foundation is established.
