Role Overview
Chesterfield County is hiring a full-time Forensic Investigator Supervisor to lead the Forensics Unit within the Police Department in Chesterfield, Virginia. This role focuses on guiding a team of forensic professionals, managing day-to-day unit operations, and ensuring high-quality support for both public requests and police investigations.
Compensation and Location
The salary range for this position is $76,269.00 to $116,311.00 annually. The job is based in Chesterfield, VA and is performed on-site.
Team Leadership and Unit Management
This position is responsible for supervising professional staff forensic investigators and other forensic support staff, reviewing crime scene reports, and keeping the team working efficiently and collaboratively. The supervisor will also step in as a forensic investigator when needed and will take the lead on major crime scenes.
Operational oversight includes maintaining enough staffing to support citizen and police requests during regular business hours as well as ensuring after-hours on-call coverage so that forensic personnel can respond to crime scenes around the clock, every day of the year.
Core Duties
- Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports for the Forensic Unit.
- Make sure evidence collection and preservation practices follow all relevant laws, policies, and regulations.
- Support staff growth through coaching, mentoring, performance evaluation, and development planning.
- Coordinate and oversee forensic training across the department.
- Provide court testimony when required.
- Handle purchase orders, receipt of orders, and inventory control for office supplies.
- Carry out other duties connected to the role as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree is required, along with three to five years of related experience, including one to three years in a supervisory or lead role, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and experience.
Preferred preparation includes graduation from the Virginia Forensic Science Academy and/or certification as an AFIS/MBIS Operator, plus five years of crime scene experience.
The ideal candidate should understand general patrol procedures, criminal investigations, forensic science, and fingerprint science, and be able to use that knowledge effectively when directing others, supervising work, and conducting investigations or scene searches.
Additional Requirements
- Must be eligible for a Virginia driver's license and have no more than six demerit points in the last 12 months or a DUI conviction within the previous four years.
- Pre-employment drug screening, FBI criminal background screening, and education/degree verification are required.
- This is a Critical Safety Sensitive role and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Use of illegal drugs and medical marijuana is prohibited for this position.
- Employees may not consume alcohol or be under the influence while on duty, on county property, or while operating agency equipment.
- The role requires work in secure environments governed by the U.S. Department of Justice CJIS Security Policy and therefore includes a more stringent criminal background check.
- Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident eligible for naturalization.
Schedule and Working Conditions
The schedule is flexible and rotating, with evening, weekend, and on-call coverage expected. The position also supports after-hours response needs and may include OC duties.
Work Environment
This role is based in the Police department and involves both administrative oversight and active crime scene work as needed.
