Job description
Role overview
Thermo Fisher Scientific is hiring an experienced Field Service Engineer to join its BioProduction Service and Support function. This is a full-time, mostly on-site position based in Iceland, supporting advanced single-use technology bioreactor systems and DeltaV automation within a GMP-controlled manufacturing setting. The selected candidate may live outside Iceland, but must be present in Iceland for roughly three weeks each month.
The role centers on meeting customer service commitments under site-specific service levels. It demands strong technical depth, fast response times, and day-to-day coordination with customer operations.
Work schedule and environment
Working hours follow a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule. The role is carried out in an office and GMP manufacturing environment, where PPE such as safety glasses, gowning, gloves, lab coats, and ear plugs may be required. The job also involves physical demands, including lifting up to 40 lbs. without assistance and, in the requirements, lifting up to 25 kg and standing for extended periods.
Key duties
- Act as the primary Thermo Fisher technical specialist at the customer’s Iceland site.
- Meet the agreed service obligations, including response times, uptime goals, and delivery commitments.
- Diagnose, maintain, and repair single-use bioreactor systems and related DeltaV automation.
- Support installation, startup, qualification, and validation work such as SAT, IQ/OQ, and related protocols.
- Resolve issues quickly to reduce downtime in a critical GMP production environment.
- Take part in deviation reviews, root cause analysis, and CAPA activities.
- Work closely with customer engineering, manufacturing, quality, and validation teams.
- Advise on technical improvements that enhance reliability and system performance.
- Train and guide customer staff when needed.
- Coordinate with Thermo Fisher Service, Engineering, and Product Support teams to resolve complex problems.
- Keep service documentation and records accurate and aligned with GMP and internal systems, including Salesforce Service Cloud.
- Look for ways to improve service quality, system performance, and customer satisfaction.
- Occasionally travel across EMEA, up to 25%, to support other sites, training, or internal collaboration.
Additional role notes
This position is dedicated to one key customer site under a long-term service agreement. It requires immediate availability to respond within contractual service levels and is performed in a biologics manufacturing environment regulated by GMP. Travel across EMEA may be required from time to time for customer support, learning, and internal coordination.
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in engineering such as electrical, electronics, mechanical, biomedical, or a related scientific discipline, or an advanced degree plus 3 years of experience.
- Hands-on experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing advanced analytical instruments, especially in bioproduction.
- Strong electrical and mechanical troubleshooting ability, including component-level diagnosis.
- Excellent customer service approach and professional presence.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Fluent English is required.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
- Comfort using Windows, MS Office, and service management tools.
- Ability to understand technical diagrams, schematics, and documentation.
- Valid driving licence and willingness to travel overnight up to 25% of the time.
- Physical capability to lift up to 25 kg and remain standing for long periods.
- Experience with bioproduction equipment, especially single-use technology hardware and automation systems.
- Flexibility to work varied hours and respond to urgent service calls.
- Ability to obtain access credentials for customer facilities.
- Strong organization and time management skills.
- Independent working style combined with a collaborative mindset.
- Willingness to broaden support across the EMEA region as the role evolves.
- Self-directed approach with sound judgment in setting priorities.
