Job description
Role overview
The University of British Columbia is hiring an Evening Service Worker for its Custodial Services team within Building Operations. This role supports the upkeep of campus buildings at the Vancouver Point Grey campus, helping maintain clean, safe, and functional spaces for offices, classrooms, laboratories, and shared areas.
What the job involves
The position is part of the CUPE 116 bargaining unit and is classified as a CUPE 116 Salaried Service Worker role. The schedule is for the evening shift from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The appointment is ongoing.
Team members in this role report through the custodial leadership structure, which may include the Director of Custodial Services, Custodial Manager, Assistant Supervisor, and Head Service Worker depending on the shift. Day-to-day assignments are issued by the Head Service Worker. Work may be completed independently, in pairs, or as part of a team, depending on the task.
Core duties
The role includes routine custodial work across a range of surfaces and spaces. Tasks may involve dusting, sweeping, mopping, washing, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, polishing, shampooing, disinfecting, and scrubbing floors, walls, fixtures, furniture, and appliances. The job also calls for the use of light or heavy-duty manual and powered cleaning equipment when needed.
Other responsibilities include keeping cleaning supplies and equipment stocked and in working order, responding to spills, cleaning and maintaining windows and glass surfaces, refilling amenities such as soap, toilet paper, paper towels, and writing paper, and clearing sidewalks or snow when necessary. The worker also collects garbage, empties bins, handles basic cleaning-related maintenance issues, and reports damaged fixtures, utilities concerns, or signs of misuse. Support may also be needed during emergencies, including building evacuation. Furniture and equipment may need to be moved or set up for events and functions.
Working conditions and expectations
Employees are expected to make routine judgement calls about the order in which custodial tasks are completed. Mistakes in this role are generally expected to have only a limited effect on service efficiency. The work is carried out under general supervision and standard procedures, with direct guidance provided for unfamiliar or unusual situations.
Compensation and timing
The salary range for this position is CAD 4,017.00 to CAD 4,230.00 per month. Applications are accepted until 11:59 PM on June 16, 2026.
Minimum and preferred qualifications
The role requires openness to diverse viewpoints, including views that may differ from one’s own, along with a demonstrated commitment to building awareness and capability in equity, diversity, and inclusion. Preferred qualifications include completion of Grade 10, at least 1 year of relevant experience or an equivalent mix of education and experience, and Building Service Worker certification as an asset. Candidates should also understand custodial standards, safety and security procedures, and be able to operate standard cleaning equipment, follow directions, learn new methods, work with little supervision, prioritize work effectively, and communicate well with managers, supervisors, and co-workers.
Additional information
This position is part of a unionized staff environment. The work contributes to campus operations, including support for university events such as final exams and Congregation ceremonies.
