Role overview
The New York North division is hiring an experienced Estimator for its Albany, NY 12205 project location. This regular, salaried-exempt role is focused on building accurate construction estimates from drawings and specifications, while also coordinating bid scopes and communicating with project stakeholders.
The position reports to the Lead Estimator, Senior Estimator, or Preconstruction Manager.
Key responsibilities
- Create detailed estimates for assigned scopes by performing quantity take-offs, estimate analyses, inputting pricing data, and completing related studies.
- Assemble bids and proposals for different delivery methods and contract structures, including lump sum, GMP, and cost-plus work.
- Handle project document control by receiving drawings and specifications, maintaining organized file systems, and sharing information with the right stakeholders.
- Act as a communication bridge between trade partners, architects, engineers, consultants, and the client, while managing assigned trade partner coordination.
- Contribute to constructability reviews by working closely with the project team, design professionals, and trade market participants.
- Develop value engineering and value analysis options that identify more cost-effective alternatives to the proposed scope.
- Build a solid understanding of the trade package scope, including contract requirements, site logistics, schedule, coordination, and methods of construction.
- Prepare trade scope requisitions as needed and work with the project team to close scope gaps or overlaps.
- Compare current estimates against prior estimates for the same scope and analyze differences.
- Review trade partner proposals, organize bid information into bid records, and participate in post-bid reviews.
- Track and resolve post-bid action items, finalize trade scopes, and provide bid award recommendations to the Project Lead.
- Oversee Assistant Estimators and Estimating Interns when assigned.
- Carry out other related tasks and responsibilities as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree plus at least 3 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and work experience.
- Working knowledge of building construction, construction materials, systems, market conditions, and trade practices.
- Ability to interpret contract documents, drawings, specifications, scopes of work, and project schedules.
- Strong understanding of estimating documentation and the ability to provide accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis.
- Ability to think conceptually and quickly develop an understanding of owner and architect requirements, even when information is limited.
- Experience managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Familiarity with procurement and operations workflows.
- Professional verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and estimating software.
- Willingness to travel a limited amount.
- Capable of meeting the role’s physical demands, including sitting, computer use, occasional mobility, occasional travel, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in both office and construction-site environments and comply with all safety policies and applicable laws.
Compensation and benefits
This salaried-exempt position has an estimated annual pay range of USD 81,000 to USD 96,000.
