Job Summary
The Environmental Service Worker I is responsible for keeping the facility clean, safe, and welcoming through routine cleaning, floor care, and waste handling in assigned locations. The position supports patient, staff, and visitor comfort by maintaining strong hygiene standards and following infection prevention and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean and disinfect assigned spaces such as patient rooms, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, elevators, stairways, locker rooms, and other work areas while following infection control procedures.
- Carry out floor and surface cleaning by sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting furniture, equipment, and floors using the proper tools and methods.
- Maintain hard floors and carpeted areas by stripping, refinishing, and treating floors and upholstery according to department guidelines.
- Wash walls, ceilings, windows, woodwork, door panels, and other surfaces to support a sanitary environment.
- Replenish supplies in assigned areas, keep track of stock levels, and report shortages when needed.
- Safely collect, transport, and dispose of trash and biohazardous waste while following safety and HIPAA rules.
- Use cleaning equipment properly, keep it in working order, and report any defects or repair needs.
- Help with minor repair or maintenance tasks and escalate larger facility concerns to the right team.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned.
- Maintain dependable and consistent attendance.
- Follow all organizational policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Prior experience of 1 to 2 years in cleaning or environmental services is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Familiarity with cleaning products, equipment, and housekeeping methods.
- Working knowledge of infection control and workplace safety practices.
- Ability to operate cleaning machinery safely and effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage time well.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills for working with staff, patients, and visitors.
- Physical capability to repeat tasks and lift or move items when required.
State-Specific Requirements
- Indiana: Lutheran Hospital requires completion of the assigned SAMA course within 30 days of hire.
- Mississippi: Completion of the assigned SAMA course within 30 days of hire is required.
- North Carolina: Completion of the assigned SAMA course within 30 days of hire is required.
