Environment Southland works to safeguard the region’s natural assets, including land, water, air, and coastal environments, in collaboration with the community and mana whenua. The role sits within a team that supports environmental decision-making across one of New Zealand’s most varied and striking regions, from Fiordland’s coastlines to Stewart Island.
About the role
The Environmental Data Management Officer will be part of the Science Integration Team and will help strengthen how environmental information is handled, improved, and applied. The position involves developing practical tools, improving processes, and making sure monitoring data remains reliable, easy to access, and useful for reporting and decision support.
Key duties
- Create tools and workflows that improve the usefulness and efficiency of environmental data for the organisation’s needs.
- Support the preparation and presentation of environmental monitoring information through LAWA and other reporting channels.
- Help maintain systems and procedures that protect the accuracy, quality, and security of monitoring data.
- Provide contract support and scientific support services as required.
What you will bring

Additional requirements
- A tertiary-level qualification in a relevant field.
- Two to three years of experience in collecting and processing environmental data is preferred.
- Strong numerical and analytical ability, along with a careful and detail-focused working style.
- Competence with computers, including spreadsheets and GIS, plus the ability to use statistical methods.
- Comfort working with new technology and adapting to technical systems.
- Understanding of environmental database systems.
- A valid full current driver licence.
- Applicants must be able to support Environment Southland’s Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities in day-to-day work, including where legislation or partnership with mana whenua applies, and in line with commitments to Ngāi Tahu ki Murihiku through the Charter of Understanding.
Workplace and location
This is an onsite role based in Invercargill, Southland, New Zealand.
Remuneration
The starting remuneration range for this role is $76,410 to $80,655.
