Job description

About McElroys

McElroys is a New Zealand law firm with deep experience in insurance, civil, maritime, and employment litigation. The team supports businesses across New Zealand with legal guidance that helps manage risk and resolve complex disputes.

With more than 30 years of practice, the firm has handled matters for both international and local clients, including professional negligence claims, earthquake and fire damage disputes, employment-related disputes, and regulatory matters.

The firm’s culture is shaped by long-standing values such as strong attention to detail, a commitment to exceeding expectations, openness to new ways of working, and a drive to set high standards while achieving practical results.

About the Role

McElroys is seeking an intermediate solicitor or associate with 4 to 8 years of post-qualification experience in civil litigation, ideally with an employment law focus, to join a close-knit team in Auckland.

In this position, you will work closely with partners and have the chance to strengthen your advocacy, technical capability, and client relationship skills while progressing to the next stage of your legal career.

Key Work Areas

  • Building and maintaining effective client relationships
  • Reviewing information to identify legal issues and work toward practical solutions
  • Drafting clear, high-quality advice, correspondence, reporting, and court documentation
  • Advocating for clients in alternative dispute resolution forums, tribunals, and courts
  • Contributing actively to negotiations to secure sensible and commercially sound outcomes
  • Running matters from start to finish with a focus on quality and timeliness
  • Working directly with partners on a range of litigation matters
  • Helping guide and support junior colleagues while developing your own leadership style

Experience and Fit

Experience in employment law and insurance law would be an advantage. To do well in this role, you should naturally reflect the firm’s values of collaboration, continuous improvement, deep expertise, and clear, direct communication.

What the Firm Offers

  • A varied role with room to develop and advance your career
  • A professional, high-performing team environment
  • A culture that is collaborative, passionate, honest, and innovative
  • Flexibility and autonomy in how you structure your work
  • Support for ongoing professional development
  • Opportunity to work on meaningful client matters where your contribution has real impact
