Role summary
The examiner works with applicants to verify documents, explain licensing procedures, process fees, conduct tests, and record results in state systems. The position also includes handling cash receipts, balancing deposits, maintaining records, and supporting occasional special assignments such as customer issues, immigration-related cases, accommodations, audits, reports, and supply or equipment needs.
Key duties
- Provide clear guidance to the public on state licensing rules, office details, fees, and application steps.
- Review identity and residency documents, confirm that they are valid, and determine whether applicants are ready for testing.
- Manage cash handling tasks such as reconciling register totals, preparing deposits, and comparing daily revenue reports.
- Help applicants complete forms, administer vision, written, and road tests, and document outcomes in the system.
- Inspect vehicles used for road testing and evaluate whether applicants can safely operate them and follow traffic laws.
- Enter and update applicant data in the License Information System for Tennessee, checking that all records match the submitted application.
- Take on complex customer service work and other assigned operational support tasks when needed.
Qualifications
Applicants must have education equivalent to graduating from a standard high school. Proof of education, such as transcripts or a diploma, is required.
This position also requires a criminal background check, including a fingerprint-based and name-based history review. Candidates must meet strict disqualifying-offense standards and must not be under want or warrant for a felony listed in the applicable federal regulations. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required, or the candidate must be able to obtain one before appointment.
Driver standards
Because the role may include driving duties, candidates must meet Tennessee driver standards. These include holding a valid driver's license and having a clean driving record for the past five years with no DUI, no reckless driving, no license suspension for moving violations, and no more than four moving violations. Agencies may allow an exception based on other factors.
