Job description

Role overview

ICBC is hiring a permanent full-time Driver Examiner II for the Fort St John Driver Licensing Office. This position combines road testing with in-office client service, helping keep roads safer while guiding customers through licensing steps. The work is based in the office and follows a resident arrangement, with daytime schedules and a strong emphasis on customer care, sound judgment, and organized time management.

The role is well suited to an experienced service professional who knows road rules well and is comfortable making independent decisions in a fast-paced public-facing environment. It includes stable unionized employment, comprehensive training, benefits, pension coverage, and the chance to build a long-term career while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

What you will do

  • Assess both commercial and passenger vehicle drivers through road tests for classes 1 through 8.
  • Carry out re-examinations when required under the Motor Vehicle Act and its regulations.
  • Use sound judgment to judge driving performance and determine whether a driver meets standards.
  • Offer customers clear and constructive feedback after each test.
  • Assist licensing centre customers by explaining procedures, answering questions, and handling fees and fines between road test appointments.
  • Stay on schedule to meet daily testing and service expectations.
  • Work independently while contributing to a small team focused on customer service and road safety.
  • Operate in changing weather conditions and in customer vehicles as part of the testing environment.

What you need

  • Strong customer service ability and a professional, positive approach with every customer.
  • Confidence to make independent decisions in demanding and time-sensitive situations.
  • Ability to communicate difficult feedback clearly and respectfully.
  • Comfort working outdoors in all weather and inside customer-owned vehicles.
  • Good time management and organizational habits for independent work.
  • Solid computer and data-entry capability; experience handling cash is an advantage.
  • Completion of a health assessment based on the duties of the job.
  • A clean criminal record check through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, as required by the Criminal Records Review Act.
  • A valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence or higher, with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to achieve the minimum standard on a required data-entry assessment.
  • Successful completion of Class 5/7 training and testing during probation is a condition of employment.

Working conditions

This position requires work in all weather, including extreme heat and cold. Some locations may also require regular overnight travel for road testing, regional coverage, meetings, or training. Work hours can change based on operational needs, and shifts may be scheduled Monday to Friday or Tuesday to Saturday. The role is based at the primary office location on all scheduled workdays.

Why this role stands out

  • Hands-on public service work that directly supports road safety.
  • Consistent daytime scheduling with no evening or on-call requirement.
  • Clear separation between work and personal time.
  • Small, locally based office environment with defined routines and processes.
  • Support from supervisors and experienced colleagues.
  • Unionized employment with job security and pension coverage.
  • Comprehensive health and wellness benefits.
  • Formal training and opportunities to broaden your responsibilities over time.
  • Potential career growth into other roles within ICBC.
