About Airways

Its services include air traffic control, surveillance, communications, flight inspection, mapping, and airspace design. The organisation works closely with government bodies, regulators, airlines, airports, and the wider aviation community. Its core values are Safety, One Airways, Excellence, and Success.
The company operates through a mix of operational business groups, governance functions, and corporate services teams. Staff are based across offices, workshops, air traffic control towers, and surveillance centres throughout Aotearoa.
About the Team
The Technology Group oversees the delivery and support of technology across the air navigation services environment. This includes engineering design, software design and development, technology architecture and infrastructure, asset management, installation and maintenance, technical training, workload planning, maintenance programme development, project management, and logistics support.
The role reports to the Technical Training Manager and sits alongside Technical Instructors and Draughting Specialists.
About the Role
This is a permanent, full-time position based at the Christchurch campus. The Draughtsperson (Electrical) will prepare detailed electrical schematics for circuit systems, switchboards, power distribution, building wiring, standby generators, and uninterruptible power supply systems. The position also involves turning one source into multiple detailed drawings and assisting other draughting staff with broader drafting work.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain electrical drawings and schematics for circuits, switchboards, power distribution, building wiring, standby generators, and UPS systems.
- Develop multiple detailed technical drawings from a single source document.
- Ensure all outputs align with legislation, governance obligations, CAA regulations, and AS/NZS3000 requirements.
- Maintain suitable technical standards across drafting systems and outputs.
- Work to agreed service levels for drafting deliverables.
- Take part in twice-yearly Draughting Cluster meetings and contribute to review of Draughting Technology Plans.
- Support the refresh of the Draughting Strategy Roadmap.
- Help develop and improve specifications, standards, policies, practices, and procedures that reflect best practice in draughting.
- Stay actively familiar with drafting technology and ensure ongoing compliance with relevant rules and standards.
- Provide general draughting support to other team members as needed.
About You
To succeed in this role, you should be a recognised specialist in electrical-system drafting, particularly involving main switchboards, power distribution, standby generators, and uninterruptible power supplies. You will need to bring both technical depth and the ability to work effectively with others in a dynamic environment.
Requirements
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience in electrical draughting within New Zealand or overseas.
- Working knowledge of New Zealand drafting standards and recommendations.
- Ability to apply a systems design approach to drafting work.
- Strong hands-on experience with AutoCAD.
- Good proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, and related applications.
- Strong planning, organisation, time management, and prioritisation abilities.
- Clear interpersonal and communication skills for engaging professionally with internal and external stakeholders.
- Adaptability, collaboration skills, resilience, accountability, and a focus on achieving results.
Desirable Experience
- Certification as a draughting professional.
- Exposure to MicroStation by Bentley.
- Previous experience in, and genuine interest for, the aviation, transport, or technology sectors.
Additional Information
Applicants must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand to be considered for this position.
