About the Organization
The Cambridge Office for Tourism works to position Cambridge as a compelling destination, helping strengthen commercial areas and raise the city’s profile at local, national, and international levels.
Role Overview
The Cambridge Office for Tourism is looking for an accomplished Director of Strategy & Operations to join its senior leadership group. In this role, you will help advance the organization’s mission by finding new ways to increase revenue, guiding marketing and communications planning, supporting financial systems, and keeping day-to-day operations running effectively.
This position acts as a close strategic partner to the Executive Director, helping shape organizational direction and turning strategic priorities into practical action. The role is central to setting long-term goals while also ensuring strong execution across marketing, business development, and operational functions.
The ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial, collaborative leader who can excel in a dynamic, creative, and fast-moving environment. Because the team is small and highly motivated, success in this role requires adaptability, initiative, and a hands-on approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Run daily operational activities and ensure the office is managed efficiently and smoothly.
- Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and expense monitoring in coordination with the Executive Director and outside accounting support.
- Handle vendor relationships, contracts, and administrative systems that support organizational performance.
- Work with the Executive Director to define and refine the organization’s strategic direction and annual focus areas.
- Convert strategic objectives and special initiatives into clear action plans with timelines, deliverables, and measures of success.
- Create and maintain systems for performance tracking, including KPIs, gap analysis, and monitoring tools across major initiatives.
- Develop strategies to broaden and increase revenue streams beyond current funding sources.
- Identify new earned-revenue opportunities, partnerships, and collaborative initiatives that align with the mission and market position.
- Build relationships with local businesses, institutions, and other partners to support collaboration, visibility, and revenue growth.
- Assess the impact of revenue initiatives and use findings to improve and adjust strategies over time.
- Stay current on trends and emerging approaches in destination marketing, tourism, and nonprofit revenue generation.
- Lead the organization’s data and analytics approach, turning insights into practical recommendations for decision-making.
- Guide marketing, communications, and visitor-facing efforts, including the Visitor Information Center, so they align with organizational goals and campaigns.
- Represent the organization at industry events, community gatherings, and partnership meetings as needed.
- Support the board and committees by preparing reports, updates, and related materials.
- Help foster a strong team culture built on professionalism, creativity, collaboration, and community engagement.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, or a related discipline.
- At least 7 years of professional experience, including exposure to business development, marketing leadership, and operational or financial oversight.
- Proven ability to build and manage sales, revenue generation, or partnership-driven programs.
- Strong financial understanding, including budgeting, forecasting, and use of accounting software; QuickBooks experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and prior experience supervising staff or consultants.
- Excellent communication skills across verbal, written, and interpersonal settings.
- Strong organizational ability, close attention to detail, and the capacity to juggle multiple priorities at once.
- Comfort using Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and CRM platforms; familiarity with project management or sales tracking tools is an advantage.
- Experience in tourism, destination marketing, hospitality, or a closely related field is required, including work involving visitor engagement, partnerships, or destination-focused marketing.
- Availability in the evenings and on weekends is necessary for events, networking, and community engagement.
- Role may involve domestic and/or international travel, and a valid U.S. passport is required.
Perks and Benefits
- Comprehensive benefits covering health, dental, vision, and life insurance.
- Simple IRA retirement plan with employer matching.
- Generous paid time off, including 13 holidays plus a floating holiday.
- Hybrid work arrangement with 3 days each week in the office; this setup may change based on organizational or scheduling needs.
- The opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization with a meaningful community impact.
- Competitive compensation in the range of $115,000 to $127,000, depending on experience.
