Role overview
The Director of Engineering leads all property maintenance and engineering operations for the hotel. This role carries end-to-end responsibility for the building, grounds, and physical infrastructure, with strong emphasis on safety, security, and protection of assets. The position also oversees budgeting, capital projects, preventive maintenance, and energy-efficiency initiatives while ensuring service quality meets or exceeds expectations for both guests and employees.
This is a management-level, full-time position based in West Bay, Zone 61, Doha, Qatar.
Key responsibilities
- Track engineering performance against budget and flag concerns to leadership.
- Oversee the upkeep of the physical plant, including refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical systems, and related equipment, in line with operating procedures.
- Manage service agreements and contracts that support the property.
- Ensure the fire response team fully understands procedures, equipment, and alarm systems.
- Guide engineering leaders in controlling operating costs such as labor, utilities, tools, equipment, supplies, uniforms, vendors, and service contracts.
- Monitor and optimize utility usage, including heat, light, power, and water consumption.
- Build and execute an engineering strategy that aligns with the property and brand business plan.
- Prepare, manage, and monitor the engineering budget.
- Ensure departmental objectives are incorporated into action plans and work programs.
- Oversee preventive maintenance programs and long-range asset protection planning, including a 10-year outlook.
- Review financial reports and statements to evaluate performance against budget.
- Identify potential issues early and present practical solutions to ownership or leadership.
- Communicate departmental priorities clearly so teams can deliver expected results.
- Supervise construction activity to help ensure projects finish on time and within budget.
- Confirm full compliance with state, local, and federal rules and regulations.
- Maintain life-safety systems such as fire-fighting equipment, sprinklers, and alarm systems.
- Keep building and equipment licenses, permits, and certifications current.
- Apply property policies consistently and fairly.
- Manage operational areas to budget by reviewing operating statements, budget worksheets, and payroll reports.
- Oversee the payroll function and control department spending to meet or outperform budget targets.
- Contribute to capital expenditure planning and manage related projects when needed.
- Take part in budgeting for the assigned areas of responsibility.
- Prepare weekly and periodic P&L review notes and analysis.
- Understand how the department affects overall property financial goals and educate the team where needed.
- Ensure employees are treated fairly and equitably.
- Handle disciplinary steps and documentation in accordance with standard and local procedures.
- Use employee feedback and an open-door approach to resolve concerns quickly.
- Recognize team achievements publicly and support a positive workplace culture.
- Resolve guest complaints and escalate issues to Human Resources when appropriate.
- Maintain regular communication across the engineering function to align daily work with business objectives.
- Lead the emergency response team for all facility-related incidents.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED, plus 6 years of experience in engineering, maintenance, or a related field, along with technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, or plumbing.
- Alternatively, a 2-year degree from an accredited university in Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or a related discipline, plus 4 years of experience in engineering, maintenance, or a related field, along with technical training in HVAC-R, electrical, or plumbing.
- Strong background in property maintenance, building systems, and facility operations.
- Working knowledge of safety, security, regulatory compliance, and asset protection requirements.
- Experience managing budgets, operating costs, capital projects, and preventive maintenance plans.
- Ability to lead teams, coordinate with leadership, and handle employee relations issues professionally.
- Capability to read and act on financial reports, operating statements, and payroll data.
- Experience with construction oversight and vendor/service contract management.
