Job description

About the Role

UnitedHealth Group is a health care and well-being organization focused on improving health outcomes for people across the globe. Through its two complementary businesses, UnitedHealthcare and Optum, the company is working to create a stronger health system for everyone. This role is an opportunity to help shape enterprise leadership capability and contribute to long-term organizational transformation.

The Director of People Development is responsible for enterprise-level leadership development strategy, design, and delivery. The role builds leadership capability, strengthens bench strength, and supports a strong talent pipeline across the organization. It carries enterprise-wide accountability and influences leaders across business units, markets, and sites without direct people-management responsibility.

Working with broad autonomy, the position partners with senior leaders, People Business Partners, and other enterprise stakeholders to advance a learning culture, improve the employee experience, and support growth and transformation goals. The Director also acts as a strategic advisor and advanced facilitator for senior executives, bringing executive presence and business judgment expected at a very senior level.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Own the enterprise strategy, framework, and portfolio for leadership development, ensuring it supports business priorities and organizational culture.
  • Design and continuously improve a connected leadership development ecosystem that includes programs, experiences, coaching, tools, and assessments.
  • Set quality standards, governance practices, and adoption expectations for leadership development across the enterprise.
  • Partner with senior leaders and People Business Partners to shape succession, capability-building, and development priorities.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to executives by using data, insight, and facilitated conversations to influence leadership behavior and business decisions.
  • Translate business realities, market dynamics, and executive challenges into practical leadership development solutions.
  • Lead complex enterprise-wide leadership development programs and initiatives, including executive and senior leader experiences.
  • Embed user-centered design practices at scale to improve accessibility, learner experience, and adoption, including data- and AI-enabled personalization.
  • Bring external research, market trends, and best practices into enterprise-ready strategies and innovations.
  • Deliver high-impact in-person and virtual facilitation for senior leadership groups, executive cohorts, forums, and strategic interventions.
  • Model advanced facilitation and coaching practices while mentoring other senior facilitators and practitioners.
  • Support enterprise efforts that build people leaders and reinforce a culture of continuous learning.
  • Analyze leadership portfolio and workforce trends to inform strategy, share insights with stakeholders, and refine programs.
  • Build strong relationships across senior leadership, People Business Partners, and key stakeholders to drive alignment and adoption.
  • Represent the organization in external forums and professional networks, bringing useful thought leadership back into the business.
  • Contribute to special projects and cross-functional initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience in leadership development, organizational development, or a related area, with substantial progression in enterprise-level learning, leadership, or talent development work in a large, complex organization.
  • Proven experience influencing senior executives and working across multiple layers of management.
  • Advanced facilitation expertise with significant experience leading senior and executive-level sessions both virtually and in person.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and execute strategies across large business units or multiple markets and sites, with clear business impact.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to influence, inspire, and align stakeholders at every level, including executives.
  • Ability to manage several high-impact initiatives in a fast-moving, matrixed environment while balancing strategy and execution.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong business acumen and the ability to solve complex cross-functional issues.
  • Deep knowledge of leadership development, adult learning, and user-centered design.
  • Experience using emerging practices, analytics, and AI-enabled capabilities.
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic ability with the skill to turn complex data and qualitative input into actionable recommendations.
  • Well-developed relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively across functions and boundaries.
