Job description
Role Overview
This position is responsible for maintaining order, safety, and supervision inside the county jail. The role involves protecting inmates, staff, visitors, and facility assets while ensuring daily detention operations run smoothly.
Compensation
Beginning pay is $50,899 without a degree and $53,443 with a degree.
Key Duties
- Safeguard inmates and prevent harm from self-injury or conflict with others; respond to alarms; search inmates and cells for prohibited items or weapons; and give inmates information about charges, bond, legal counsel, and personal contact matters.
- Track inmate status and accountability by handling booking on arrival, confirming all inmates are secured in cells, completing walkthroughs and headcounts, and watching control towers and surveillance feeds.
- Support day-to-day inmate needs by issuing clothing, distributing meals and commissary items, supervising recreation and religious programs, and overseeing cafeteria and laundry activities.
- Observe inmate health conditions, carry out basic health checks, involve medical staff when necessary, and escort or transport inmates to medical care when directed by a doctor or nurse.
- Move inmates between different areas of the facility or to external locations as required.
- Protect the safety of staff and visitors by controlling access, checking for contraband, and escorting visitors within the facility.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, at least one year of work experience in any field, or an equivalent mix of education, training, and experience that matches the needs of the role. Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
Licensing and Certification
A valid Georgia driver’s license is required and must be kept current. The successful candidate must also complete and maintain Basic Jail Officer Certification, CPR, and First Aid.
