Role Overview

Barick Mining Corporation is looking for a highly driven and committed Customs Compliance Specialist to join its Government Relations team at Lumwana Mining Company. Reporting to the Regulatory Affairs Manager, the role focuses on ensuring the company remains fully aligned with all customs, import, export, and broader trade compliance obligations.

Key Duties

  • Check customs declarations and related supporting records each month to confirm they are accurate, complete, and compliant with regulations.
  • Confirm tariff codes, customs valuation, duty treatment, and eligibility for import and export incentives on a monthly basis.
  • Spot, evaluate, and track customs compliance risks across the business and help put mitigation actions in place.
  • Look into compliance incidents, determine the underlying causes, and suggest corrective and preventive measures.
  • Track customs compliance KPIs and recommend process improvements and efficiency gains.
  • Assist with customs planning and compliance for major capital projects, project cargo, equipment imports, and operational needs.
  • Support the management and oversight of customs incentives such as APC approvals, duty exemptions, suspensions, rebates, VAT deferment, and similar schemes.
  • Keep precise records of customs permits, approvals, rulings, exemptions, authorizations, and official correspondence.
  • Ensure customs transactions are processed and reconciled correctly in ASYCUDA World, Smart Invoicing, SAP, and related systems.
  • Prepare management reports on customs compliance, including major risks, patterns, opportunities, and areas needing attention.
  • Assist in preparing files and evidence for customs audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews.
  • Advise internal teams on customs rules, tariff classification, valuation, origin rules, duty treatment, temporary import rules, and import/export processes.
  • Help design, implement, and continuously improve customs compliance policies, procedures, controls, and frameworks.
  • Track changes in laws and regulations affecting customs and international trade, and evaluate their effect on company operations.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the Zambia Revenue Authority Customs Division and other government bodies.
  • Coordinate responses to customs queries, assessments, rulings, information requests, and regulatory review processes.
  • Provide support for wider regulatory engagement activities led by the Regulatory Affairs Manager.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 School Certificate is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, International Trade, Law, Business Administration, Accounting, or another relevant discipline is required.
  • At least 5 to 7 years of experience in customs compliance, customs operations, international trade, freight forwarding, logistics, or a similar area.
  • Strong working knowledge of Zambia Revenue Authority customs procedures, tariff classification, duty treatment, rules of origin, and international trade requirements.
  • Proven experience handling customs audits, incentive programs, duty exemptions, temporary imports, import/export compliance, and regulator interactions.
  • Hands-on experience using ASYCUDA World, Smart Invoicing, and other customs management platforms.
  • Background in mining, energy, or manufacturing will be an added advantage.
  • Solid understanding of regulatory compliance and risk management in a mining environment.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability.
  • Good stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • High integrity and sound professional judgment.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast-moving setting.
