About the Role
The East Louisiana Mental Health System (ELMHS) supports adult mental health evaluation, treatment, habilitation, and consultation. Its services cover inpatient care, jail-based assessments, supervised group homes, residential programming, forensic evaluations, custody and aftercare, along with intermediate and long-term psychiatric services integrated into Louisiana’s broader care system.
ELMHS is seeking a dependable and detail-focused custodian to join the housekeeping team in Jackson, LA. The selected candidate will carry out routine cleaning and environmental sanitation tasks, help keep the workplace safe and hygienic for clients and staff, and provide guidance to less experienced housekeeping personnel in a secure behavioral health setting.

Job Duties and Key Information
- Perform general custodial work such as dusting walls, furniture, appliances, and other dust-collecting surfaces; sweeping; wet mopping; stripping; waxing; and buffing floors in client residences and related environments where there may be a high risk of aggression or violence, with limited mobility, communication, and response capacity affecting work pace, conditions, and staff safety.
- Clean and disinfect spaces contaminated by bodily fluids, and ensure biohazardous waste is removed and handled correctly. Keep the environment safe for clients of all age groups by identifying hazards and informing the supervisor promptly.
- Act as a lead custodian for entry-level custodians and less experienced Custodian 2 employees.
- Manage bloodborne pathogen waste spills and specialized cleaning duties using formal training in BBP/PPE, SDS awareness, and hazardous chemical safety.
- Recognize, address, and/or report breaches of regulatory standards in a restrictive setting, while taking steps to protect clients, employees, and visitors from risks linked to those violations.
Position Details
This role may be appointed on a probational or promotional basis. It can be filled at the Custodian 1, Custodian 2, or Custodian 3 level depending on experience. The job is based in the Housekeeping Department at ELMHS in Jackson, LA.
The position qualifies for Facility Longevity premium pay starting at $1.00 per hour for hours physically worked.
