Job description

Role overview

This role is based at NMS Business Park, CW7 2GN in Winsford. It is a part-time, on-site position with the Probation Service, supporting people on probation through community payback work that helps improve local areas and gives service users a chance to contribute positively.

The job is operational in nature and involves directly supervising groups of offenders completing community sentence work. You may also drive service vehicles to move people or equipment as required.

Working pattern

The schedule includes weekend working, and a weekend day is part of the normal pattern. Community Payback projects operate seven days a week, so you should expect frequent weekends and occasional evening cover. On days you work at weekends, pay is enhanced by 50%.

Typical shifts can involve up to 7 hours supervising a group at an unpaid work placement. The role may not always allow standard rest breaks, but wellbeing support is built into the working approach.

Applicants should be comfortable with a varied and active role where no two days are the same.

Pay and progression

Successful candidates will start on a salary of £28,064 pro rata. New starters are expected to join at the minimum point of the pay band. The Probation Service also offers annual pay progression through a Competency Based Framework, subject to eligibility, and pay bands are reviewed annually in line with Civil Service pay guidance.

Main duties

You will lead small teams carrying out unpaid work tasks and make sure activities are completed safely, effectively and to a good standard. The role also includes demonstrating good practice when needed and keeping work sites properly supervised.

Typical work may include clearing overgrowth to improve public safety, restoring community spaces such as sports halls and playgrounds, planting trees, preparing flowerbeds, cleaning streets, removing litter, and clearing graffiti.

Application and selection

Applicants must complete a short application form and provide responses to two Civil Service behaviour questions and one experience-based question. The selection process uses Success Profiles and assesses behaviours, strengths and experience. If applications are very high in volume, only the lead behaviour may be assessed at the first stage.

Feedback is only provided if you attend an interview or assessment.

Eligibility and essential requirements

You must have the right to work in the UK and in the Civil Service. This role is not eligible for a new Skilled Worker visa. If you have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously before the 22 July 2025 rule changes, your case may be reviewed under the transitional arrangements.

A full UK manual driving licence is mandatory. Automatic-only licences are not acceptable. Candidates must also be willing and able to meet all legal right-to-work requirements throughout employment.

Security and checks

Successful candidates must pass a criminal record check. Where government assets are involved, baseline personnel security standard checks are also required.

About the work

This is a meaningful, varied role with a strong focus on helping people on probation and improving the community. It suits someone who is empathetic, confident communicating with others, and comfortable taking the lead in a team environment.

The position offers job security, opportunities to make a difference, and a supportive working culture.

Behaviours assessed

The recruitment process will assess:

  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Managing a Quality Service
  • Working Together
  • Leadership

Additional benefits

  • Access to learning and development
  • A working environment with flexible working options to support work-life balance
  • An inclusive and diverse workplace culture
  • Civil Service pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%
  • Annual leave
  • Public holidays
  • Season Ticket Advance

Nationality requirements

This job is broadly open to UK nationals, nationals of the Republic of Ireland, Commonwealth nationals with the right to work in the UK, and nationals of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein and relevant family members, subject to the applicable Civil Service nationality rules.

Artificial intelligence may be used as a support tool, but all information provided in an application must be truthful, accurate, and based on the candidate’s own experience.
