Role Overview
The CDI Specialist will work closely with physicians, nursing teams, other caregivers, and coding professionals to improve the clarity, completeness, specificity, and overall quality of clinical documentation. The role focuses on chart review, identification of documentation opportunities, and placement of queries when needed, in line with AHIMA guidance and company policies. Documentation review supports accurate DRG assignment, severity of illness, risk of mortality, case mix reporting, and the measurement of physician and facility outcomes.
This is a remote role.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete clinical documentation improvement work while meeting project-specific productivity and quality expectations.
- Follow CDI and coding standards established by AHIMA and ACDIS.
- Review records carefully and issue documentation queries when clarification is needed.
- Assess charts for completeness and accuracy, especially in relation to severity of illness and risk of mortality.
- Ensure reviews are completed accurately and within required timelines.
- Apply knowledge of DRG-related payer issues, documentation gaps, and CDI requirements.
- Evaluate findings and help identify likely root causes behind documentation or coding errors.
Requirements
- Prior experience working remotely, including using EMRs and other digital tools.
- Strong analytical capability.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Comfort working with numerical data.
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team.
- Capacity to handle multiple clients and projects at once.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Skill in managing and retrieving information across multiple files.
- Commitment to high accuracy and strong attention to detail.
Education and Experience
- CCDS or CDIP certification is required, or a willingness to obtain CCDS certification within 6 months of joining.
- Active RN license required.
- At least 3 years of CDI experience required.
- 2 or more years of acute care clinical experience is preferred.

Physical Requirements
The position may require regular eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity for operating office equipment. Work at a computer terminal for 6 to 8 hours per day is expected, along with the ability to function amid frequent interruptions. Extended sitting may be required at times. Occasionally, the role may involve lifting or moving materials weighing up to 20 lbs. The job can also include elevated stress during busy periods and when multiple deadlines must be managed.
